OMGWHAT? GREE Acquires Mobile-Social Game Developer Funzio For $210M

Japanese gaming giant GREE just acquired mid-core, mobile game developer Funzio for $210 million in an all-cash deal that should boost its ability to build games for Western audiences. Funzio is behind Crime City, Modern War and Kingdom Age, which are graphical RPGs that have had more than 20 million downloads on Apple's iOS, Android or Facebook platforms. I had heard a few weeks back that Funzio was in a fundraising process at a $350 million post-money valuation and had also been loosely talking to various buyers in an auction-style process. Apparently, the fundraising efforts helped tip Funzio into a sale, but maybe not at the valuation I had originally heard about. Still, $210 million is not bad at all, considering that the company had raised about $20 million to date from IDG Ventures and Playdom co-founder Rick Thompson. For comparison, Draw Something-maker OMGPOP went to Zynga for $180 million in cash plus an undisclosed earnout. Why did GREE buy Funzio? GREE is a multi-billion dollar mobile gaming company from Japan that is trying to break into Western markets. Its profit margins put Zynga to shame, but the company is running out of room to grow as its home country becomes saturated.

International HTC One X and Galaxy Note get early CyanogenMod 9 builds

If you're a custom ROM aficionado looking to get stuck into rooting and flashing your HTC One X, then there's finally an unofficial build ready that'll let you do just that. The first CyanogenMod 9 port for the international, Tegra 3-powered One X has appeared over on MoDaCo?, courtesy of team TripNDroid. In addition to replacing the bright colors of Sense with the more subdued, angular look of stock Android, you also get a mostly-functional smartphone, which is something of a rarity when dealing with early, unofficial builds. Much of phone's hardware is working, with camera and Wifi hotspot being borked in the current build.

The CM9-based fun isn't limited to the One X, though -- the international Samsung Galaxy Note (that's the one that also goes by the name GT-N7000) has received its first CM9 build today, too. The build comes courtesy of renowned Samsung hackers TeamHacksung?, and gives N7000 owners their first semi-official taste of CM9. The list of known issues in the first experimental build is fairly short, but one of them will be a showstopper for many -- voice calls don't work properly at the moment, and if you make or receive one, the other person won't be able to hear you. Nevertheless, if you're determined to live on the bleeding edge of the custom ROM scene, we're sure you'll take that sort of thing in your stride. After all, phones are for flashing ROMs, not for talking to people.

Those of you old enough to remember Windows Mobile no doubt played Meon at some point. The idea's simple enough — you use light to free the cute little Meons from whatever it is that's keeping them trapped. The game starts out simple, but pretty soon you'll be bouncing light off mirrors and changing colors with prisms to the point that you're not sure what started where, or where it's going to end up. It's strangely addicting.

The Android version is faithful to the original. Our only real complaint is that it doesn't really take advantage of the larger screen sizes.
