(AP) ? Are you ready to "Respect the Roll?"

Kimberly-Clark is looking to shake up the toilet-paper accessory category with toilet roll covers from designer Jonathan Adler.

To boost awareness about a new formulation of its Cottonelle toilet paper that it says is 30 percent stronger, Kimberly-Clark Inc. decided to forgo traditional advertising. Instead, it's offering limited-edition boxes to hide your backup rolls. Who knew you needed such a thing?

It's the latest effort by consumer product makers to spice up stagnant categories with eye-catching design. In 2010, Kotex introduced the "U by Kotex" line of pads and tampons with neon packaging and pad carriers designed by stylist Patricia Fields, for example.

Allen Adamson, managing director of global branding firm Landor in New York, said Target Corp. has successfully brought design to a lot of consumer product categories with such lines as the housewares rethought by renowned industrial designer Michael Graves.

But it's new for toilet paper.

"It's just surprising when design finally meets toilet paper ? that's sort of the final frontier," Adamson said.

Even though it's a $10 billion industry, according to Nielsen, most people don't pay attention to which toilet paper roll they buy ? or they stay loyal to one brand for decades.

"Consumers shop on autopilot and shop quite a bit on deal," in the toilet-paper aisle, admitted Kurt Simon, brand director for Cottonelle. "They tune out when they go into the aisle. And, largely speaking, they tune out (toilet paper) advertising as well."

Adler created covers in three bright, geometric patterns. Known for bold colors and pop graphics, he has designed everything from home furnishings to hotels and currently operates 16 of his own stores.

The roll covers will be available in January at respecttheroll.com for a shipping charge of $1.99 plus an offer code from a package of Cottonelle toilet paper. Or you can order one now for $3.99, including shipping.

Adler, whose other projects have included straws for extra-skinny Diet Pepsi cans, said the uniqueness of toilet paper covers appealed to him. He wanted them to be "bold, punchy and mood-enhancing" and tried to infuse a "pop-art element."

"I don't get calls every day to design spare toilet roll covers," he said. "But I believe every piece in your home, no matter how unexpected or mundane, should be fabulous."

Supervisors adopt county energy policy

Glenn County supervisors adopted an energy usage and sustainability policy for county departments last week that will curb their natural gas and electricity consumption.

Planning and Public Works Director John Linhart said the policy is the direct result of working groups studying the issue to find "common sense'' solutions.

Linhart said each department will be encouraged to follow the new measures, and it will be up to the department heads to enforce the policy.

"We don't want to force them on departments," he added.

The policy will be in effect for a year and then be reviewed by the board, Linhart said.

Some departments have already started using their own energy efficiency policies, he said.

A few of the mandates include setting thermostats no lower than 75 degrees for airconditioners and no higher than 68 degrees for heating.

Closing all exterior doors and windows to avoid energy loss, except when the climate allows, and to open or close window coverings to utilize or block the sun's rays.

Other options include only having lights on when necessary, shutting personal computers and monitors off at night, printing double-sided for all nonofficial documents and so on.

Supervisor Leigh McDaniel said the county is getting away from simply recycling to adding energy efficiency to its internal operations.

However, he wants to bring a broader policy back for the county as a region, McDaniel said.

The fact Glenn County is working with KVB, Inc. on its proposed waste conversion facility near Hamilton City and the board just approved a solar power generation facility near Thunderhill Raceway indicates it is heading in the right direction, he said.

A Green Policy Committee consisting of one Glenn County supervisor and representatives of all departments is to meet quarterly for the term the policy is in effect, county officials said.

The Dos and Don?ts of Secured Loans

There is another important difference between unsecured and secured loans. Because unsecured loans have a shorter repayment span, there is a fixed rate of interest on them for their duration. However the interest on secured loans is often variable and can go up or down according to the base rate and the terms of the lender, making them a variable rate debt. What might sound like an attractive rate today may not be so attractive in five or ten years? time.I was interested in an unsecured loan at first. This seemed a better option because it would allow me to borrow money without having to put up my house as security. When I started to enquire about this type of loan, I was told that most lenders would insist on a ?charging order? against my property. Although this would not necessarily lead to repossession, it would give the right to claim against the sale of my house if I could not keep up the payments. When you are borrowing a large sum of money over a long term, it is easy to be tempted into taking out more than you absolutely need. My wife thought that an extra ?3000 for a decent family holiday would make very little difference in the long term, but thanks to the research I had been doing, I was able to set her straight on this. There would be time enough for holidays once we were completely debt-free and the less we borrowed, the sooner that would be.My wife, being the eternal optimist, was convinced we would win the lottery or something and be able to write off our debt overnight. I had to point out that in such an unlikely event, we would probably have to pay even more! This is because secured loans usually include ?redemption penalties? to deter you from paying off your loan early. In fact we could end up being fined if we tried to do so!Unsecured loans have much shorter repayment terms than secured loans ? usually a maximum of seven years; whereas secured loans allow much longer. In fact because of the costs of setting up secured loans for lenders, they actually prefer these to be long-term ? anything up to twenty years. Longer repayment times mean smaller monthly payments, but they also mean considerably more in total interest charged. When we first discussed taking out a loan, we had not given the subject the serious thought it deserves. Had we got into serious debt, we would have found out a great deal more on the subject from professional and free debt counselling, but our situation was slightly different. I did, however, find some excellent advice online about both unsecured and secured loans, which prevented me from making any serious mistakes. When my son found himself in serious difficulties abroad last year, I needed to find ?40,000 very quickly to help him out. My savings were not great, so I approached the bank to enquire about home owner loans, which are secured loans against your house and payable over a long term. I had very little time to consider alternative ways of raising such an amount of money, but I did get some advice from friends first. One interesting fact I learned was the importance of a good credit score and how to achieve this. Having a good credit rating makes taking out unsecured or secured loans so much easier. Simple things like keeping up regular payments on credit cards and not leaving small debts behind when you leave an address can all help your credit score significantly.

How the iPad has changed the world

The iPad Has Both Changed and Revitalized Reading One area that iPad has made a large impact is reading. Sure the e-Book readers have also had an impact but not in the way that the iPad has. The iPad has done this is by being a platform for brilliant app developers. The apps developed for the iPad have made reading on an electronic device fun. People that, although desktop computer literate, had no idea what an RSS was for, now [...]

Economists: Obama's policies 'fair' or 'poor' (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama gets mediocre marks for his handling of the economy and Mitt Romney easily outpolls his Republican rivals in an Associated Press survey of economists.

The economy ? and who bears responsibility for it ? is likely to be a decisive issue when voters to go the polls next November.

The economy is still struggling to recover from the Great Recession of 2007-2009. The housing market remains weak and a debt crisis in Europe threatens growth in 2012. The unemployment rate is at a recession-level 8.6 percent, up from 7.8 percent when Obama took office in January 2009. That month, the recession was already more than a year old.

Half of the 36 economists who responded to the Dec. 14-20 AP survey rated Obama's economic policies "fair." And 13 called them "poor." Just five of the economists gave the president "good" marks. None rated him as "excellent."

The economists' criticisms vary. Some say Obama was distracted by his health care overhaul. Others say his $862 billion stimulus program was poorly designed. Still others fault him for not pushing for an even bigger stimulus when the economy proved weaker than expected.

The AP economists expect economic growth to pick up to 2.4 percent next year. That would be an improvement from the under-2 percent growth expected for 2011. But the economists foresee little improvement ? a dip to 8.4 percent ? in the unemployment rate by Election Day.

Asked which of the Republican presidential candidates would do the best job managing the economy, two thirds of the economists named Romney, one chose former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The rest didn't pick anyone at all.

Allen Sinai, president of Decision Economics, says Romney, who ran a private equity firm before turning to politics, is the "hands down" choice among Republican presidential contenders squaring off in the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses.

"Romney's a technocrat," Sinai says. "He's not an ideologue. He has a history in the real world of business."

The Iowa presidential caucuses, which kick the GOP nominating process into high gear, begin Tuesday and polls show Romney in a strong position. Romney has based his campaign on the notion that he has the best chance of beating Obama on the economy because of his private sector experience.

Here's more about what the economists, mostly from banks and other financial firms, independent consultancies and academia, had to say about:

_Obama.

Some economists say the Obama administration didn't push hard enough for more government spending or tax cuts to stimulate growth. "They've generally tried to take the right kinds of measures but have often failed to lead with enough vigor to overcome political obstacles," says William Cheney, chief economist at John Hancock Financial Services.

Others say the president tried to do too much, especially by pushing early for legislation to overhaul the nation's health care system instead of focusing on policies to promote growth and create jobs.

"Health care reform wasn't necessarily the most important thing to be dealing with when you're in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression," says Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economics.

Some critics say Obama's 2009 stimulus program relied too much on public works projects that were slow to get going. Decision Economics' Sinai says the president should have favored more tax cuts that put money in Americans' pockets immediately.

Sinai notes that public works projects failed to pull Japan out of a long economic slump that began in the 1990s and continues today. After the money is spent, "you're left with deficits and debt. And someday if you need new government stimulus, you can't afford it. And that's where we are now," Sinai says.

Republican strategist Rich Galen says the GOP has successfully painted Obama as a reckless steward of taxpayer money: "In a Tea Party era where Big Government is the enemy, throwing money at problems is the enemy," he says.

An Associated Press-GfK poll of American adults earlier this month found that 60 percent of American adults disapprove of Obama's performance on economic issues.

Jamal Simmons, an adviser to the Obama campaign in 2008, said the president must remind voters how bad things were when he took office. The economy lost more than 820,000 jobs the month Obama was sworn in, the biggest drop since October 1949.

Since the job market hit bottom in February 2010, it has produced nearly 2.5 million jobs ? 117,000 a month. "Is it enough? Absolutely not, but it certainly ain't what it used to be," Simmons says. Perhaps Obama can take heart from President Ronald Reagan's experience. The unemployment rate was 8.5 percent ? a tick away from where it was last month ? a year before Reagan was re-elected in a 1984 landslide.

"You have to look at where you would have been if he hadn't gotten the stimulus package through," says Maury Harris, chief economist at UBS Securities. "We might be a lot worse off."

_Romney.

Many of those who chose Romney couldn't cite any of the former Massachusetts governor's economic proposals. Nevertheless, his background won over the economists. Romney graduated from Harvard Business School and served as CEO of Bain & Company, a management consulting business in Boston, and Bain Capital, a spinoff investment firm, in the 1980s and 90s."He has the experience that the other candidates lack," says Harris of UBS Securities.

Some of his Republican rivals have taken unconventional positions. Texas Rep. Ron Paul advocates abolishing the Federal Reserve and returning to the gold standard. Texas Gov. Rick Perry has said it would be "almost treasonous" for Bernanke to try a third round of bond purchases to jolt the economy before November's election.

Among Romney's chief economic plans: repealing the Obama administration's health-care law; cutting the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent; and making permanent tax cuts on dividends, interest and capital gains from President George W. Bush's administration.

"He thinks about the economy in a more global way" than his GOP rivals, Naroff says. "He's not a rigid ideologue."

But Romney's business experience is also vulnerable to criticism. His Republican rivals have blasted him for profiting from putting companies through bankruptcy and laying off workers.

"At a time when the American public is suspicious of corporate wealth and power, that could do real harm to Romney," Simmons says. The economists were not asked to evaluate Obama's economic policies against Romney's or any other Republican candidate.

The economists gave good marks to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke: 13 rated Bernanke as excellent, 14 as good and nine as fair. He was praised for taking extraordinary steps to calm financial markets after the collapse of Lehman Bros. in 2008 and to jolt the weakest economy in 70 years.

"He's been dealt a tough hand, but played it as well as anybody could," says Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James & Associates.

The economists praise Bernanke for his aggressive response to the financial crisis in the fall of 2008. He slashed short-term interest rates to zero, made loans to cash-strapped banks and bought Treasury and mortgage bonds to push down interest rates and calm financial markets.

"The Fed's response (to) the financial crisis and recession was dramatic and swift," says Sean Snaith, an economist at the University of Central Florida.

When the economy stalled in the second half of 2010, Bernanke launched another round of bond purchases to push long-term rates lower.

He has sometimes had to overcome dissent from others on the Fed's rate-setting board. And Bernanke's Fed has had to take the lead in economic policymaking because Congress and the White House are so often ensnarled in partisan bickering.

Still, some economists say Bernanke's Fed has gone too far, that zero interest rates are hurting retirees and savers without delivering many economic benefits.

"Perhaps the greatest criticism might be that the Federal Reserve has tried to do too much ? trying to offset the impact of necessary budget cuts, European debt problems and other factors out of its control," says Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University.

Google's planned 'iPad killer' tablet: 5 talking points (The Week)

New York ? In an interview with an Italian newspaper, chairman Eric Schmidt revealed plans for the company's first tablet device. Should Apple be worried?

In an interview with an Italian newspaper, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt promised that the company would release an "iPad killer" tablet in the first half of 2012. "In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality," he said. "You will see a brutal competition between Apple and Google Android." Still, Google has a spotty history when it comes to developing its own hardware, and most other tablets touted as "iPad killers" have failed to live up to the moniker. Could Google be the company to change that pattern? Here, five talking points:

1. The market is more competitive than ever
It's rumored that Apple's iPad 3 will be released in early 2012, around the same time as this new Google tablet, says Nathan Eddy at eWeek. But the iPad is no longer Google's only competition. Amazon's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet currently claim 40 percent of the tablet market. This is also the first time the release of a new iPad will be met with an equally buzzy competitive release, says Shane McGlaun at Slash Gear. It will be interesting to see the new iPad "go head to head" with its Google competition.

SEE MORE: Google Reader's 'infuriating' redesign

?

2. This could be the perfect Android showcase
This is an ambitious move, says Erika Morphy at Tech News World, but it makes sense. Google's Android operating systerm has been offered on other companies' tablets, including Amazon's Kindle Fire, to mixed reviews. By developing its own tablet, Google can potentially craft the optimal device to showcase Android and fill a hole in the market. "With the slower adoption of most Android tablets compared to the iPad," Google could actually make a splash with a high-end tablet that "is tightly and perfectly designed to use Android," says McGlaun.

3. But there's still reason to worry
Google doesn't exactly have a great track record when it comes to developing its own hardware, says Douglas A. McIntyre at 24/7 Wall St. The company's Nexus One smartphone, its effort to break into that market, was discontinued in 2010 after a disappointing launch. Meanwhile, the company has enjoyed great success licensing its Android software to other companies. Google "should leave hardware products to those firms with the backgrounds to create them." While it's true that Google's latest smartphone, the recently introduced Galaxy Nexus, has been more warmly received than the Nexus One, says Morphy, "it hasn't made enough of an inroad" to bode well for a Google tablet.

SEE MORE: Google Music: A threat to iTunes?

?

4. A tablet of its own could anger Google's partners
Google's proposed release of its own tablet "could cannibalize the sales of partner tablets" from companies like Samsung and HTC that use Android, says Todd Haselton at BGR. Assuming that Google will hoard the most sophisticated upgrades to Android for its own tablet, the move would "create tension with its best Android customers," says McIntyre. "They'd ask why Google would challenge their sales" when they are the company's "allies in the effort to spread the use of Android to further its lead" over Apple and its operating system.

5. This is a smart move in the long run
Look to Google's most recent high-profile launch for proof that even if this tablet experiences initial hiccups, the company will move forward, says Morphy. If the rollout of Google+ demonstrated anything, it's that Google is "willing to keep trying something even when the first endeavor is less than successful." "My hunch is that Google will try this," Simon says, "and if it doesn't work, might try it again at another point."

Wives in ads, kids on the bus as GOP voting nears (AP)

CONCORD, N.H. ? Mitt Romney's wife gushes about his silly side and devotion to their five sons and 16 grandchildren. Rick Santorum's college-age daughter opines online about missing the campus coffee shop and chats with friends about their Friday night plans. Jon Huntsman's daughters generate much-needed buzz for him with a joint Twitter account and online videos, including at least one that went viral.

Days away from voting in the Republican presidential race, the path to the nomination is quickly becoming a crowded family affair with spouses and offspring pitching in and doing far more than just smiling from the sidelines.

Ann Romney, Anita Perry and Callista Gingrich are starring in new TV ads for the husbands they've loyally campaigned for. Romney extols her husband's character and says "to me that makes a huge difference" in a candidate. Perry tells the "old-fashioned American story" of how she and her husband were high school sweethearts who had to wait until he was done flying airplanes around the world for the Air Force before they could marry. Callista Gingrich wishes the nation a Merry Christmas "from our family to yours" in husband Newt Gingrich's new holiday-themed TV ad.

Candidate kids, including those born to Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, are helping, too, acting as surrogates, strategists and, in some cases, sounding boards for parents competing for the right to challenge President Barack Obama next fall.

"There are times when I wonder why I'm not sitting in the coffee shop on campus with my friends, lightheartedly discussing ('Saturday Night Live') videos, how bad the cafeteria is, what our plans are for Friday night or how absolutely swamped we are with school work," Santorum's daughter Elizabeth lamented in a recent blog post. "But this is where God wanted me."

She has taken time off from her junior year at the University of Dallas to serve as a self-described "field staffer/phone banker/chauffeur/surrogate speaker," for her father, primarily in the leadoff caucus state of Iowa.

Her father, who hopes Iowa's socially conservative voters turn out for him on caucus night Jan. 3, rolled out an ad late last week featuring the entire Santorum clan, including the family German shepherd, Schotzy. The spot highlights his 21-year marriage to his wife, Karen, notes that he has coached Little League and introduces viewers to the youngest of the couple's seven children, Isabella, born in 2008 with a genetic disorder.

Sometimes the family members campaign with the candidates and other times they go it alone.

Such family involvement carries risks and benefits. The stories they tell often humanize the candidates and help voters relate to them. But the things they say, and do, can sometimes cause headaches for the campaign advisers who are left to try to figure out a way out.

While Rick Perry spent several days campaigning in Iowa recently, his wife was hundreds of miles away in New Hampshire emphasizing his small-town upbringing and conservative values at a retirement community chapel. Audience members then peppered her with detailed questions about such subjects as taxes, immigration and the death penalty.

"She handled them quite well," said Sid Schoeffler, an independent voter from Concord. "When she knew the answer or knew the campaign's story line, she recited it. And when she didn't know, she said so. I thought that was refreshing."

"Compared to what I expected, she made a favorable impression," he said. "But whether it's enough to swing my vote, I don't know yet."

Earlier in the year, as Bachmann rose in public opinion, her husband, Marcus, was forced to defend his Christian counseling business from claims that its therapies included "curing" people of being gay. With Bachmann now near the back of the GOP pack in polls, Marcus Bachmann joined her at the start of her bus tour of Iowa's 99 counties but was quickly replaced by four of their five children.

"My husband had to go home. We're small-business owners and someone had to go home and mind the store," Bachmann told one crowd. And at one point, Bachmann, who began losing her voice in the middle of the jam-packed tour, turned over the microphone to son Harrison, a teacher who talks up his family's ties to the state, and teased: "Harrison, say some nice things about me and you'll get extra cookies."

In Paul's case, he's probably hoping validation from his son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a favorite of the tea party, will give him a boost with that pivotal constituency in Iowa. Rand Paul is also appearing in a television ad for his father.

Romney's five-son family and wife of more than four decades have long been a part of his presidential campaigns. But the spotlight has been shining more brightly on his wife and their brood in recent weeks as the campaign seeks to cast the former Massachusetts governor as a person of "steadiness and constancy" while drawing a contrast with the thrice-married Gingrich.

Ann Romney also has spoken openly about how her husband supported her through her struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Huntsman's wife and the couple's three oldest daughters are near-constant companions in New Hampshire, the only state where the former Utah governor is earnestly campaigning. His daughters recently generated a huge amount of buzz with a video spoof of an ad by former rival Herman Cain. They donned oversized glasses and fake mustaches to look like Cain's campaign manager.

"We are shamelessly promoting our dad like no other candidate's family has," one daughter said in the ad. "But then again, no one's ever seen a trio like the Jon2012 girls."

38 Haitian migrants die when boat sinks off Cuba (AP)

HAVANA ? Cuba says 38 Haitian migrants have died after a boat they were in sank off the island's eastern coast.

According to an official communique read out on state television, 87 others were rescued by Cuban civil defense forces after Saturday's shipwreck, including four children. A search was on for more survivors.

The boat was spotted in the sea off Cuba's Guantanamo province, some 590 miles (950 kilometers) from Havana. The province is home to the U.S. naval base where terror suspects are held.

It was not clear where the Haitians were heading, though Cuba likely was not their intended destination. The dead included 21 men and 17 women, according to the communique.

New evidence on Vitamin D, cancer and heart disease

Taking vitamin D with calcium supplements reduces fracture risk, especially for institutionalized seniors, but whether the sunshine vitamin prevents cancer is uncertain, according to a systematic review of the medical research published earlier this week in Annals of Internal Medicine.

Investigators at Tufts Medical Center in Boston and elsewhere analyzed 19 randomized controlled trials (16 for fracture risk and 3 for cancer outcomes) and 28 observational cancer studies.

The research on fracture risk involved mostly postmenopausal women around age 65. Analysis of the research findings indicate that taking vitamin D in combination with calcium supplements reduces fracture risk in older adults, but the preventive effects were smaller in community-dwelling seniors or postmenopausal women than in institutionalized older adults. Moreover, the analysis still does not make clear what the optimum dosing regimen might be.

The evidence on the benefits and harms of vitamin D supplementation for cancer prevention is inconclusive, the researchers reported. Limited data from randomized clinical trials suggested that high-doses of vitamin D supplements can reduce the risk for cancer, but data from observational studies suggested that higher blood concentrations (known as 25-hydroxyvitamin D) might be associated with increased risk. And one clinical trial showed adverse outcomes associated with supplementation, including increased risk for renal and urinary tract stones.

A separate review of the research on vitamin D and cardiovascular disease in the same issue of Annals of Internal Medicine found no clear evidence that vitamin D supplementation helps prevent cardiovascular disease. Researchers from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, reported that vitamin D deficiency has been linked with hypertension, heart attack and stroke, as well as other cardiovascular-related diseases. But few randomized, controlled trials have evaluated the effect of vitamin D replacement on cardiovascular outcomes, and the results have been inconclusive or contradictory. Some large studies are currently underway.

Bottom line: The Tufts findings on fractures and cancer will help inform recommendations on taking vitamin D with or without calcium supplements expected soon from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent group that develops recommendations on preventive health care. Meanwhile, it?s best to consult a physician before deciding whether to take vitamin D supplements since they might reduce the effectiveness of some medications.

One of the few times throughout the year when there won't be a mountain of Android news is coming up.  We're talking about Christmas, of course, when the western world takes a few days off and we eat too much, drink too much, and spend time with our loved ones.  Everyone here at AC is stoked at the thought of all the Android phones and tablets that will be unwrapped come Christmas morning, and we'll be sure to be watching our friends and followers on Google+ and Twitter to see how their holidays are going.  Join in the fun, and give us a shout to let us know how you're enjoying your holidays, or just to say hey.  Without you guys we wouldn't have near as much fun doing what we do here, and we appreciate each and every one of you.

Adam Lambert Arrested for Bar Brawl with Boyfriend

It was trouble in paradise -- or at least Helsinki, Finland -- for Adam Lambert and his Finnish reality-star boyfriend Sauli Koskinen early Thursday morning. The two were arrested by local officials after reportedly getting into fistfight -- with each other! -- at a gay bar.

What the payroll tax 'fiasco' will cost the GOP: 5 theories (The Week)

New York ? Republicans are getting hammered for their bungling of the payroll tax cut extension. How badly will it hurt the GOP going into an election year?

House Republicans are on the verge of "caving" to the Senate and White House in a bruising fight over extending the popular payroll tax holiday, which expires Jan. 1, says ABC News' Jonathan Karl. At this point, House Republicans are just scrambling "for a face-saving way to give up" and accept the two-month extension agreed to overwhelmingly in the Senate. Whatever the House does, though, it will likely be too late to erase the damage Republicans have inflicted on themselves. Here, five theories on how the payroll tax fight will affect the GOP:

1. The GOP is handing the 2012 election to Obama
"GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell famously said a year ago that his main task in the 112th Congress was to make sure that President Obama would not be re-elected," says The Wall Street Journal in an editorial. But given the hash he and House Speaker John Boehner made of this tax fight, "they might end up re-electing the president before the 2012 campaign even begins in earnest." The standoff has already given Obama a poll boost, and it's also hurting his potential 2012 rivals, says Joshua Green in The Boston Globe. "They are all scrambling to win over the conservative base," so some are siding with the unpopular House payroll tax revolters ? a stance that could haunt them next year.

SEE MORE: 'Zombie Obama': A GOP group's 'disgusting' email

?

2. And control of Congress to the Democrats
It's not just Obama "in a stronger re-election position" because of the GOP's bungling, says The Wall Street Journal editorial. This "payroll tax fiasco" is also making the already-unpopular GOP-controlled House even more loathed, and "the chances of Mr. McConnell becoming Majority Leader in 2013 are declining." If this chaotic and sloppy House-Senate GOP communication breakdown continues next year, we're headed for "the return of all-Democratic rule."

3. Republicans have lost their key advantage on taxes
Maybe the worst casualty for Republicans is the loss of their "strongest and only remaining brand advantage: Tax cuts," says Martin Longman at the?Booman Tribune. What's shocking about how this has played out, says Derek Thomson at?The Atlantic, is that Obama actually conceded a lot to Republican in the Senate bill, and he's still "somehow put the party of tax cuts in the position of walking out over a broad tax cut." This debate is as much about winning as it is taxes, and Republicans aren't just losing this round, "they are losing their own debate."

SEE MORE: Payroll tax fight: Has Boehner lost control of the GOP?

?

4. And they're losing the middle class
It's certainly "a reversal of the customary positions" for Democrats to be united and Republicans divided over a tax cut, says Green in The Boston Globe. So it looks especially bad for the GOP that its "sudden reluctance involves a tax cut that broadly benefits the middle class rather than the rich." Voters are noticing. Obama's recent five-point approval bump in a CNN poll was from big gains in the middle class, and a new ABC poll has Obama not only beating Republicans on taxes, 46-41 percent, but also killing them on who voters trust to protect the middle class, 50-35 percent.?

5. Hold on. Republicans will win this in the end
"None of the obvious storylines to come out of this latest congressional skirmish look all that good for Republicans," says David Weigel at?Slate. But the GOP is very good at getting the "policy sweeteners" it wants, even if it takes a short-term political hit. "The cynic's bet is that the story of GOP dysfunction won't matter" in the end. All the House Republicans have to do is wait for the Democratic side to blink, "and it always does," especially when their president is up for re-election.

London, December 22, 2011 Elsevier's Journal of Clinical Virology in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today announced the publication of a special supplement entitled 'Update on HIV Diagnostic Testing Algorithms'. This timely supplement contains articles which summarize studies since the 2010 US HIV Diagnostics Conference validating the proposed new US HIV diagnostic testing algorithm. In addition, review articles and original research related to the topic of HIV diagnosis and viral load monitoring are included.

Dr. Bernard Branson, Associate Director for Laboratory Diagnostics, CDC-Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention said, "The Journal of Clinical Virology supplement assembles, in one place, the most important research papers validating the performance of the new diagnostic algorithm for HIV testing. This performance validation represents one of the most significant developments in HIV diagnostics since CDC first recommended the Western blot for supplemental testing 22 years ago. We especially appreciate the efforts by the publisher and editors of the Journal of Clinical Virology, as an important service to public health, in making this supplement freely accessible to all at http://www.Journalofclinicalvirology.com."

Deutsche Boerse, NYSE offer to cap derivatives fees for 3 years (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Deutsche Boerse (DB1Gn.DE) and NYSE Euronext (NYX.N) have offered to cap fees on trading in their European derivatives contracts for three years in a last-ditch effort to get their $9 billion merger cleared in the European Union.

The latest offer came after a first set of concessions made in November failed to address the European Commission's competition concerns while opponents have criticized the second batch of proposals offered last week as only incremental adjustments.

The Commission has expressed concerns about the merged entity's more than 90 percent share of the exchange-listed futures market and possible barriers to new players.

"In addition to the submitted remedy proposal, both companies expressed their commitment to maintain the current level of their published standard fees for their European derivatives contracts for a period of three years," the exchanges said in a statement on Tuesday.

They said the offer was made in a letter to EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia.

Almunia told a news conference earlier on Tuesday that a decision on the deal was possible by the end of January. The Commission is scheduled to decide by February 9 whether to approve the merger.

Separately, a person familiar with the matter said the exchanges would be meeting with European Commission officials on Wednesday in a so-called state of play meeting to get feedback on last week's concessions following a market test.

The exchanges face the risk of regulators blocking the merger if they are not convinced by the concessions. Due to the tight time constraints, it would be very difficult for the companies to offer more.

?Warrior? DVD release on Tuesday: Greg Jackson helped make it super realistic

?Warrior? DVD release on Tuesday: Greg Jackson helped make it super realisticHe's nicknamed "The Maestro" and "The Professor" for a reason.

Greg Jackson knows his mixed martial arts in and out of the cage. That's why the producers of the movie "Warrior" leaned on the MMA trainer so heavily.

You can check out "Warrior" when it's released this Tuesday Dec. 20 for digital download and on DVD/Blue-ray.

Cagewriter has several copies of the DVD to give away. Check out the Cagewriter Facebook page for details. Happy Holidays!

The movie sounds great and it certainly has the stamp of approval from Jackson.

The Albuquerque-based owner of Jackson's MMA was an integral part of making the movie feel realistic. Jackson schooled the actors on the key moves and actions of the fight game, but he was on point in making sure everyone in the film knew how important it was to get across the positive messages of MMA.

"The biggest thing for me was how MMA and combat and martial arts in general can be a tool for good," Jackson told ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "[The producer] wanted to come at it from a more artistic point of view, a more realistic point of view."

Jackson thought "Warrior" was a true reflection of the game.

[...] It's as accurate as any movie can get about MMA. It shows again how martial arts can be a healing thing not just a tool of violence. So there's all these great messages in it that really resonated with me. I was excited to be a part of it," said Jackson.

ProMMANow did a nice review of the film that features brothers, who meet in the finale of a $5 million MMA tournament.

The attention to detail for the MMA fight scenes and the training the actors had to undergo to make them look like authentic fighters on screen will be appreciated by MMA fans.

The most difficult thing audiences will have to deal with is their sympathy and alliance between the brothers. They'll find themselves rooting for both guys, but for very different reasons.

Professional fighters Stephan Bonnar, Yves Edwards, Rashad Evans and Nate Marquardt all make appearances in the film. There's even a bow-tied Josh Rosenthal playing the referee role.
