Post-revolution Egyptians to US: Stay out

CAIRO ? There is a local advertisement in the arrivals hall at Cairo International Airport. The ad shows a picture of Egypt's iconic Tahrir Square, packed during the revolution, with a quote from U.S. President Barack Obama: "We should raise our children to be like Egyptian youth.?

The quote from Obama was shortly after Egyptians had revolted and toppled long-time dictator and American ally Hosni Mubarak. The ad reflects a sense of pride Egyptians have about how they inspired the world, including the U.S. president. It also shows how a genuine acknowledgment from the U.S. goes a long way in Egypt.

But when it comes to their attitudes about America?s involvement in their country?s affairs, few Egyptians view the U.S. favorably, and or more importantly, with any trust.

U.S. seen as a meddler
Egypt's relationship with America goes back decades. But Egypt was cemented as a cornerstone of U.S. policy in the Middle East after its Camp David Peace Treaty with Israel. Following that, the U.S. bankrolled the Mubarak regime and the military that sustained the regime for 30 years.

That?s not lost on ordinary Egyptians. They may not know the intricacies of U.S. policy in Egypt, but intuitively they know that the U.S. backed and legitimized the man who oppressed them for three decades.

NBC News

Alaa El Din Mohamed, a taxi cab driver in Cairo, shares his views about the U.S..

So it should come as no surprise that most Egyptians view U.S. involvement in Egypt negatively.

A recent Gallup poll found 81 percent of Egyptians oppose American aid to political groups. And 84 percent of Egyptians surveyed doubt the U.S. is serious about spreading democracy in the region. The overwhelming majority of Egyptians reject both U.S. aid to civil society organizations and economic assistance to the country as a whole. They see U.S. aid as instruments used to manipulate Egypt?s domestic and foreign policies.

Alaa El Din Mohamed, a 34-year-old taxi driver, summed up his current views on the U.S.

?We are looking out for our country?s interests. For Egypt's interests we want stability, we want to work, we want to advance forward. We don't have any problems with the U.S., but we're just interested in our own country,? he said. ?We want to be able to stand on our own two feet.? We want to look forward and then afterwards we can think about the U.S.?

And yet, despite the negative attitude, the U.S. as a country and Americans as a people remain symbols of democracy, freedom and modernity in the eyes of many ordinary Egyptians.

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

?The U.S. is a developed, advanced country and organized. Everything there is civilized that's what comes to my mind in regards to the U.S.,? Hala Abdel Rahman, a 50-year-old housewife, said when asked about her impressions of the country. ?We would hope and wish that Egypt can become a developed country like the U.S.?

Many Egyptians are still drawn to the idea of the U.S. as the ?land of opportunity? with thousands going there yearly to pursue educational opportunities and seek a better life.

Living in America still resonates loudly with Egyptians who believe most Americans enjoy a decent quality of life. In fact, many here draw a distinction between Americans and American foreign policy.

NBC News

Mona Bayoumi had high hopes for U.S. President Barack Obama and how he could improve things in the Middle East, but she said she's been disappointed.

?America as a people and stuff are really good people, they have values and are good people,? said Mohamed, the cab driver. ?But the most important thing is they don?t interfere in our country.?

Feeling let down by Obama
During the Egyptian revolution, I remember seeing a poster in Cairo?s Tahrir Square that read, ?Yes We Can, Too,? playing off of Obama?s 2008 presidential campaign slogan that change is possible.

Today, many people in Egypt feel let down by Obama who they believe was slow to respond to the Egyptian people?s own calls for change during the revolution. Others believe Obama hasn?t followed through on his promise to change how the U.S. deals with the Middle East ? from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Iran.

Mona Bayoumi, a 25-year-old administrator a Cairo arts college, believes there is a gap between what the U.S. promises and what it does.

?At the beginning when President Obama first came, we had a lot of hope that things would improve and be fixed ? especially with Iraq and Iran,? said Bayoumi. ?But we waited for something to happen and we didn't see anything...To be honest nothing that we expected to happen happened and nothing that we wanted happened.?

In a country of 85 million people, gauging the public?s attitudes is always a challenge.

But the underlying principle in how Egyptians view the U.S. is simple. After decades of being on the receiving end of U.S. foreign policy that arguably didn?t improve the quality of their lives, nor advance their own interests, Egyptians want to chart their own future with as little help from Washington as possible.

Whether the U.S. lets them is a whole different question.

(AP Photo/Virginia Mayo)

(AP) ? After tough all-night bargaining, European leaders appeared to salvage what had seemed to be a summit teetering toward failure by agreeing early Friday to funnel money directly to struggling banks, and in the longer term to form a tighter union.

The agreements at a European Union summit in Brussels suggested Germany had yielded a bit on its insistence on forcing tough reforms in exchange for rescue money. That was a victory for Italy and Spain, who have argued they have done a lot to clean up their economies yet are facing rising borrowing costs.

Markets breathed a huge sigh of relief on the news. Renewed concerns about Europe's debts have rattled investors worldwide on and off for over two years amid fears they could threaten the global economic recovery.

Following big gains across Asia, European shares opened sharply higher, with Germany's DAX up 2.4 percent and the CAC-40 in France 2.6 percent higher.

Stocks in Italy and Spain were doing particularly well, with Milan's FTSE MIB up 3.2 percent and Madrid's IBEX a hefty 4.1 percent higher.

The euro was also heavily in demand, trading 1.1 percent higher at $1.2571.

The importance of recapitalizing banks directly became evident when Spain asked for ?100 billion for its shaky banks. Under current rules the bailout loan had to be made to the government, which would then lend it on to the banks. But having that debt on the government's books spooked investors, who began demanding higher interest rates for lending money to the government.

The result was rates that would have been unsustainable in the long term. Lending the money directly to the banks would avoid putting that debt on the government's books.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy called it a "breakthrough that banks can be recapitalized directly."

Analysts remain skeptical about whether the moves will fix Europe's debt crisis, especially as the amount of money available ? some 500 billion ? to help in the crisis firefighting is dwarfed by the amount of debt across the continent. Italy, alone, has outstanding debt of ?2.4 billion.

"While there may be some temporary sense of relief that the summit has not descended in to acrimonious discord, what has been thus far agreed is nothing more than sticking plaster," said Marc Ostwald, market strategist at Monument Securities.

One aspect that may ease the short-term pressures at leaders is the agreement that those countries that were following budget rules could apply for bailouts that would not come with the stringent conditions that have accompanied previous EU bailouts ? a recognition, according to Italian Premier Mario Monti, of the work such countries were already doing in reforming their budgets.

Monti said Italy did not intend to apply for a bailout.

Still, Van Rompuy said the bailout agreement was important.

"We are opening the possibilities for countries that are well-behaving to make use of financial stability instruments, the EFSF and ESM, in order to reassure markets and get again some stability around some of the sovereign bonds of our member states," he said, referring to two bailout funds set up by the EU.

Van Rompuy said leaders of the 17-nation eurozone also agreed to a joint banking supervisory body. And he said the leaders of the full 27-member European Union, which includes non-euro countries such as Britain and Poland, agreed to a general long-term plan for a tighter budgetary and political union.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was "very satisfied that we took good decisions on growth." She must defend the deal in front of German parliament later Friday.

The leaders agreed to devote ?120 billion in stimulus to encourage growth and create jobs, though half of it had been previously agreed, and it only includes ?10 billion in actual new commitments. France had pushed for the growth package, arguing that austerity measures imposed to stem Europe's debt crisis were stifling growth and making it worse.

The leaders agreed on "the four building blocks" of a tighter European Union ? but said they wouldn't start pinning down details until a report in October. The building blocks were laid out in a sweeping document presented by Van Rompuy and colleagues earlier this week that included sharing debt in the form of jointly issued eurobonds.

Van Rompuy said the report expected in October would be "a specific and time-bound roadmap for the achievement of a genuine economic and monetary union."

"The aim is to make the euro an irreversible project," he said.

He did not say Friday, however, whether the general agreement on the tighter union included any commitment on eurobonds from Germany ? which has firmly opposed sharing debt with more profligate countries such as Greece.

Leaders were arriving again for more talks Friday morning before the summit wraps up by mid-afternoon.

Saturn moon Titan may harbor ocean below surface

(AP) ? Scientists reported Thursday on the strongest sign yet that Saturn's giant moon may have a salty ocean beneath its chilly surface.

If confirmed, it would catapult Titan into an elite class of solar system moons harboring water, an essential ingredient for life.

Titan boasts methane-filled seas at the poles and a possible lake near the equator. And it's long been speculated that Titan contains a hidden liquid layer, based on mathematical modeling and electric field measurements made by the Huygens spacecraft that landed on the surface in 2005.

The latest evidence is still indirect, but outside scientists said it's probably the best that can be obtained short of sending a spacecraft to drill into the surface ? a costly endeavor that won't happen anytime soon.

The research looks convincing, said Gabriel Tobie of France's University of Nantes.

"If the analysis is correct, this is a very important finding," Tobie said in an email.

The finding by an international team of researchers was released online Thursday by the journal Science. The scientists pored over data from the orbiting Cassini spacecraft, which flew by Titan half a dozen times between 2006 and last year and took gravity measurements for a glimpse of its interior.

They found Titan got squeezed and stretched depending on its orbit around Saturn, suggesting the presence of a buried ocean. If Titan were solid rock and ice, such deformations would not occur.

"Titan is quite squishy," noted Jonathan Lunine of Cornell University, who was part of the research team.

Scientists did not delve into the characteristics of the ocean, but previous estimates suggested it could be 30 miles to 62 miles deep and contain traces of ammonia. Titan is one of the few worlds in the solar system with a significant atmosphere, and the presence of an underground ocean could help explain how Titan replenishes methane in its hazy atmosphere.

Having an internal body of water would also make Titan an attractive place to study whether it would be capable of supporting microbial life. Other moons on the shortlist: Jupiter's Europa, where an underground ocean is thought to exist and another Saturn moon, Enceladus, where jets have been seen spewing from the surface.

"Any environment that has liquid water needs to be investigated carefully," said planetary scientist Jean-Luc Margot of the University of California, Los Angeles, who had no role in the research.

Supreme Court: Affordable Care Act Is Constitutional

This morning the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the Affordable Care Act is constitutional. The health insurance mandate, also known as "Obamacare" was found to be "permissible under Congress's taxing authority." The full ruling (PDF) is now available, and the court's opinion begins on page 7. Amy Howe from SCOTUSblog summarized the ruling thus:
"The Affordable Care Act, including its individual mandate that virtually all Americans buy health insurance, is constitutional. There were not five votes to uphold it on the ground that Congress could use its power to regulate commerce between the states to require everyone to buy health insurance. However, five Justices agreed that the penalty that someone must pay if he refuses to buy insurance is a kind of tax that Congress can impose using its taxing power. That is all that matters. Because the mandate survives, the Court did not need to decide what other parts of the statute were constitutional, except for a provision that required states to comply with new eligibility requirements for Medicaid or risk losing their funding. On that question, the Court held that the provision is constitutional as long as states would only lose new funds if they didn't comply with the new requirements, rather than all of their funding." Further coverage is available from CNN, the NY Times, and Fox.

Eldercare Finally Recognized by Feds ? AARP

Caregiving

Wahoo, eldercare has arrived! The latest federal survey, which tracks how much time people spent per day working, performing household tasks, engaging in leisure activities, and taking care of children in 2011, has a new category: Eldercare.

This entry into the annual American Time Use Survey (ATUS), put out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, reflects the deepening responsibilities Americans age 15+ have for providing unpaid care to someone over age 65?perhaps a parent, spouse, relative or friend.

And just wait: Nearly 10,000 people a day in the United States will turn 65 in the U.S. for the next 20 years. As the 78 million baby boomers age, those number of hours are going to escalate big time.

Eldercare covers a lot of turf, from helping with meals and medication to grooming to transportation to companionship. Or really, anything else that needs to be done.

The ATUS is weighty information used in federal economic, health and safety, and family/worklife balance research, as well as for international comparisons. The inclusion of eldercare is significant. For laymen, it provides insight into how Americans spend time, what they do, and with whom. The study further propels momentum for coming up with solutions and policies to ease the burden of family caregivers.

Here are the survey headlines:

  • No surprise to some: 56% of the 39.8 million eldercare providers were women. Note that the male/female gap is getting smaller. The age 45-54 demographic provided the most eldercare (23%), followed by ages 55-64 (22%), then age 65+ (16%).
  • Surprise: A spouse or domestic partner provided just 4% of eldercare, while 42% cared for a parent, 20% for a grandparent, 20% for another relative and one out of four for a non-relative.
  • On average, 24% took care of at least one person 65+ every day, for an average 3.1 hours; 23% helped several times a week, 20% once a week; 20% several times a month; and around 11% once a month.
  • 85% of care came from someone who did not live with the recipient.
  • 69% cared for just one person.
  • Oh, boy! 23% of providers also had one or more kids at home under age 18. Can you say ?sandwich??
  • One out of six people in the U.S., or 16% of the civilian noninstitutional population ages 15+, spent time helping elders.
  • More than 60% of care for an older person came from someone age 45+; one-sixth by a person age 65+.

Which statistics did you find most interesting? My pick: Very few recipients live with providers. What is your eldercare situation?

Reforming National Flood Insurance Program | The Energy Collective

Image

With the Senate set to vote today on fixes to the ailing National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a new C2ES brief explains why the program is chronically in debt to the U.S. Treasury, and how to make it solvent. We urge, among other things, that Congress allow federal underwriters to begin taking into account rising flood risk due to climate change.

The 44-year-old federally-backed NFIP covers 5.6 million American households and more than $1 trillion in assets in flood-prone areas along rivers and coasts. Flooding is not an easy risk to insure, so historically private insurers chose not to. But in assuming that role, the NFIP has at times served to encourage rather than contain risk, and has racked up $18 billion in debt in the process.

Among the problems: subsidies and loopholes allow low premiums that don?t cover the actual risk, and the flood maps the NFIP relies on are often woefully outdated. Going forward, the gap between revenue and risk is likely to grow as development continues in flood-prone areas?and as those zones become larger and riskier due to sea-level rise and more extreme precipitation, two consequences of climate change. Recent research indicates that the East Coast of the United States, with its large NFIP policy pool and asset valuations, is a risk hotspot, with rates of sea level rise well above the global average.

Over the years, as NFIP?s structural problems have become more and more evident, Congress has approved a series of short-term reauthorizations without really tackling the underlying issues. With the program again due for reauthorization, there finally appears to be some prospect of serious reform.

Last year, the House passed H.R. 1309, which would allow premiums to rise up to 20 percent a year, limit subsidized premiums to primary residences, and establish a technical advisory council to help update flood maps. The bill stops short, however, of requiring that updated maps take into account the full projected effects of climate change.

Today, the Senate is scheduled to take up its own version, S.1940. While the bill would limit premium increases to 15 percent a year, it also would require that NFIP flood maps reflect the ?the potential for future inundation from sea level rise, increased precipitation, and increased intensity of hurricanes due to global warming.?

Differences between the two bills will have to be ironed out later in conference committee. And while each is a step in the right direction, neither goes as far as needed to put the program on the path to solvency.?

Our brief, The National Flood Insurance Program: Risks and Potential Reforms, lays out a fuller set of reforms to reduce both flooding risk and financial risk by encouraging flood preparedness and by ending effective subsidies for building in flood-prone areas. In order to both maintain affordable coverage and solvency, the NFIP must be authorized to undertake a combination of full-risk pricing, cost effective mitigation measures such as stronger building codes for new construction and reinsurance purchases for catastrophic risk. While the risks are rising, with smart planning we can reduce costs, prepare for a changing climate and protect vulnerable communities.

'Women faced problems at every stage of adult life' says report from University of Leicester and University of Essex

Women working in hedge funds struggle to be taken seriously at work, according to a new study from two leading management experts.

The report from the universities of Leicester and Essex looked into the concept of "adulting" which is defined as the attempt by people to be seen as mature and responsible, professionally and socially.

The academics, who looked at men and women at a London hedge fund, found that women faced problems at every stage of adult life from getting started in the company to keeping credibility among colleagues after giving birth.

By contrast, young male staff were given more opportunities to settle into corporate life, and suffered fewer dilemmas in juggling work and parenthood, found Jo Brewis, Professor of Organisation and Consumption at the University of Leicester School of Management, and Dr Kat Riach, Senior Lecturer in Management at Essex Business School at the University of Essex.

"Our in-depth research into life for male and female workers at a busy hedge fund showed women are never the right age in organisational terms," said Professor Brewis, who has borrowed the phrase 'never the right age' from fellow management experts Professor Wendy Loretto and Dr Colin Duncan from the University of Edinburgh Business School, who originally coined it.

Professor Brewis and Dr Riach gathered evidence in late 2010 through 53 interviews with men and women at the fund aged between 25 and 37, and 150 hours of observation.

They found that women's problems began when they entered the company. Unlike their male colleagues they were given little or no informal guidance and training as new members of a team.

When one young female employee found that she had done something incorrectly weeks before, she said: "I thought 'Why didn't they just tell me that? Were they scared I was going to burst into tears or something?' That really bothered me!"

Once they had children, women thought it necessary to hide their day-to-day parental duties as much as possible, to prevent damage to their careers. One female worker said: "I think the pressure is trying to prove (yourself), trying to act as though you haven't had a baby and still do everything exactly the same, like you've got a puppy at home."

New fathers found themselves in a much easier position, according to the research. Talking about a male colleague, one female employee described how she'd asked him how his life had changed after becoming a father. He replied: "No, I haven't noticed any difference at all." The woman added: "I was like, 'I bet your wife has!'"

These differences in the treatment of men and women existed despite proclamations of gender-blindness by the fund's staff. One male trader said: "Money doesn't know you're a woman. If you make a profit or you make a loss, the bottom line is all that matters, [that's] all that anyone takes any notice of."

The paper will be presented at the 7th Gender, Work and Organisation Conference at the University of Keele, on Thursday 28 June.

If you make a profit or you make a loss, the bottom line is all that matters, [that's] all that anyone takes any notice of."

The paper will be presented at the 7th Gender, Work and Organisation Conference at the University of Keele, on Thursday 28 June.

Samsung Galaxy Note for TMobile pops up in claimed press shots, we try to feign surprise

There's been demo units, FCC filings and the obligatory blurry photos, so it was only a matter of time before leaked press imagery completed our picture of a Galaxy Note for T-Mobile USA. As long as they're not cosmetic makeovers by wishful T-Mobile fans, the CellPhoneSignal images portray... well, a Galaxy Note. No exotic colors, no obvious clues supporting talk that it ships with a preloaded Android 4.0 upgrade. Most of the hardware changes, then, should be all about adapting the HSPA+ 3G to support T-Mobile's airwaves. Unconfirmed talk has the Galaxy Note reaching Magenta on July 11th; that's nine months after the original version popped up, but we're sure some will be thankful just to have more choices than AT&T for that phablet fix.

Dell outs XPS 14 with optional mobile broadband, XPS 15 with Kepler graphics

Dell's XPS 13 Ultrabook has been rather lonely since it launched in early 2012, but the company is introducing two new laptops to round out the updated XPS line. Today it announced the 14-inch XPS 14 and the 15-inch XPS 15, both of which feature the same aluminum chassis as the XPS 13 and run Core i5 or Core i7 Ivy Bridge processors.

The XPS 14 Ultrabook will be available in two configurations, both of which include a backlit keyboard and a 400-nit, 1600 x 900 display. The main difference between the two models is connectivity: the higher-end XPS 14 comes with integrated mobile broadband and uses Dell's NetReady "pay as you go" service to get online when Wi-Fi is out of range. Both versions come with up to 8GB of RAM and can be configured with a 500GB drive spinning at 5,400 RPM paired with a 32GB SSD or a standalone 512GB SSD, and the WWAN model comes standard with a 500GB drive with a free fall sensor on board. Another difference is graphics: the base model ships with Intel HD Graphics 4000, while the WWAN model offers an NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M GPU. Dell claims the notebook provides up to 11 hours of runtime, "the longest battery life of any Ultrabook." The XPS 14 starts at $1,099 and is available today. It just so happens that we've already taken the laptop for a full test drive: check out our review here.

Next up is the XPS 15, which weighs 5.79 pounds and sports a 1920 x 1080 Corning Gorilla Glass display. The laptop includes either a DVD-RW or Blu-Ray drive and comes with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. As far as graphics go, you get a choice of NVIDIA's GeForce GT 630M chip with 1GB of dedicated memory or GeForce GT 640M graphics with 2GB of RAM. Pricing starts at $1,299, and like the XPS 14 this laptop is available today. Check out our hands-on gallery below.

Heat championship parade set for Monday in Miami

Get out the white, red and black, and sprinkle on a bit of trophy gold!

The celebration for the Miami Heat's 2012 NBA Championship will be marked by a nearly two-mile parade Monday through downtown Miami.

And for Broward and Palm Beach County fans? There was nothing announced as of Friday afternoon, a Heat official said.

Though players like Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller own Broward properties, they'll have to commute south like the rest of the team's devotees, whose Heat car flags could be seen on game nights waving along I-95.

The city of Miami announced the 90-minute parade will begin at 11 a.m. from the corner of Southwest 8th Street continue east and turn north onto Brickell Avenue. Marchers will proceed across the bridge that spans the Miami River, continue north on Biscayne Boulevard and end at the Heat's house, AmericanAirlinesArena.

Broward has not always been shut out when a pro team wins a championship. The then-Florida Marlins Get your Marlins Tickets now! celebrated their 2003 World Series win with a Miami tickertape parade, followed that night with a celebration farther north.

"The owners were very enthusiastic about doing something that had never been done before---a water ticker tape [boat] parade here in Fort Lauderdale," said Nicki E. Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

She added, "It is a great win for all the South Florida fans supporting the Heat, wherever the celebrations are held."

Fort Lauderdale business owner and "ecstatic" Heat season ticket holder Scott Windsor, 34, agreed, even though he'd love to watch a boat parade with friends from his downtown balcony.

"We understand it's the Miami Heat, and their Dade County fans would be the priority," Windsor said. He won't attend Monday's parade because of work and the expected crowds.

"If they did something for Broward County, I would make every effort to be there," Windsor said. "It would be great if it happens. But I don't think they owe us. With the economy, are they going to throw a parade in all three counties?"

Monday's plans were announced 12 hours after the Heat won their second NBA title, a long six years after their 2006 triumph when parade was also held in front of the triple-A.

After Thursday night's win, jubilant fans held impromptu processions of their own through the Westchester section of Miami and elsewhere. They'll have to make like Emilio Estefan ? who plays the congas for fans during games ? and keep the beat alive for two more days until the spectacle takes to the streets yet again.

Oklahoma City tried to delay the party, but Miami stole their thunder and Game 5 of the series, 121-106.

The 2011-2012 season ? shortened because of a lockout ? was intense.

Once play resumed, labor issues were forgotten by fans as the countdown games that really mattered began in April against the New York Knicks; Indiana Pacers; the Boston Celtics and finally, the Thunder.

It's a sweet victory for Heat nation. Especially after the team's heartbreaking defeat to the Dallas Mavericks in the finals a year ago during the first Heat season for LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

So take a breath, Heat stars and fans, and rest up.

There's more partying to come!

IF YOU GO: Transporation Options for Monday's Heat Parade

Tri-Rail and Metrorail will offer regular weekday service for fans who don't want to drive to downtown Miami for the parade.

Fans switching between Tri-Rail and Metrorail will need to pay a $2 transfer fee in cash each way. Exact change is required.

You also can take either the new 595 Express buses or Broward County Transit buses to Aventura Mall, then switch to Miami-Dade buses for the rest of the trip downtown.

More details will be available in Sunday's paper.

Karolin Troubetzkoy, Owner, Anse Chastanet & Jade Mountain Resort

St. Lucia luminary and hospitality veteran Karolin Troubetzkoy, owner, Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain Resort, has been recognized as the 2011 Caribbean Hotelier of the Year. Troubetzkoy accepted the honor before an international audience of hospitality and tourism industry leaders assembled for the Golden Jubilee Gala celebrating CHTA?s 50th anniversary, hosted at the Montego Bay Convention Center in Jamaica. Troubetzkoy is the 33rd recipient of this coveted award, widely considered the most prestigious in the region.

Co-sponsored by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) and MMGY Global, the annual Caribbean Hotelier of the Year Award is the highest professional honor bestowed in hotel and resort operations in the Caribbean. The award recognizes excellence in all areas of operations, as well as a commitment to the training and development of staff, contributions to the community, and a demonstrated commitment to sound environmental practices. The award also acknowledges each recipient?s active role in both national and regional issues affecting Caribbean tourism.

Troubetzkoy?s passion for guest service, natural leadership and marketing savvy have played an instrumental role throughout her impressive career spanning more than two decades in St. Lucia. As owner and executive director of marketing and operations for the award-winning Anse Chastanet, she currently oversees all aspects of operations while continuing to develop the property?s facilities and services. Troubetzkoy guided the resort?s first large expansion from 37 to 49 rooms in 1990. Upon completion, she pioneered innovative marketing campaigns that enabled the property to achieve over 90% occupancy between 1992 and 2001. She has also directed the marketing efforts on behalf of Jade Mountain Resort since 2004. Both Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain are widely celebrated as two of the Caribbean?s top resorts, consistently recognized among the world?s best by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines.

A patron of St. Lucia?s cultural arts community, Troubetzkoy has curated Anse Chastanet?s eclectic art collection of indigenous woodcarvings and acrylic paintings, collaborating with local and international artists in a creative residency exchange program. Her passion for promoting healthy and sustainable lifestyles inspired her vision for the resort spa, Kai Belte. She conceptualized two new culinary experiences based on fresh, locally sourced cuisine ? one entirely vegan, and another that fuses innovative East Indian and Saint Lucian flavors.

Troubetzkoy?s local charity work ranges from youth education and care efforts for senior citizens to an ?adopt a farmer? program. She established Anse Chastanet?s charitable guest account in 1989, and assists with the purchase of books and stipends for children of resort staff. She secured funding for a new school cantina and kitchen for the Bouton School near Soufriere, and after Hurricane Tomas, arranged for immediate relief funding to aid these organizations.

The current president of the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association, Troubetzkoy also serves as chairperson of the Marketing Committee of the St. Lucia Tourist Board. She received the Crystal Award from the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association in 2002, and was named recipient of the St. Lucia Hotelier of the Year award in 2006.

Appointed Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2009, Troubetzkoy holds a degree in business administration with majors in both tourism marketing and hotel and restaurant management from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich. She is fluent in German, French, English and Italian.
