A-Rod's struggles at plate hurting Yankees in ALDS

NEW YORK (AP) - For all of his home runs, All-Star accolades and huge salaries, Alex Rodriguez finds himself in a most familiar spot this season.

A-Rod is an October lightning rod.

With every swing and miss, memories of his amazing run during the New York Yankees' championship season in 2009 fade even further. Instead, fans are becoming more and more vocal, calling for manager Joe Girardi to drop him from the No. 3 spot in the lineup.

Rodriguez struck out to end the Yankees' 3-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in Game 2 of their division series Monday night, leaving the best-of-five matchup tied at 1.

He's fanned plenty of times - five in all while going 1 for 9 so far in the series.

"I feel fine at the plate," Rodriguez said after the loss. "I've just got to finish at-bats. I'm getting good swings."

He'll have the chance to turn things around Wednesday night when the series shifts to the Bronx for Game 3. Hiroki Kuroda (16-11) starts for New York against Miguel Gonzalez (9-4), a rookie right-hander who has 17 strikeouts in 13 2-3 innings against the Yankees in two starts.

After their train experienced an electrical outage after the loss Monday and turned a usual 2-hour, 15-minute trip to New York into a 5-hour journey, manager Joe Girardi was reluctant to address the Yankees' more pressing power problem Tuesday.

"I think that we're going to do whatever it takes to win this three-game series. Nothing that we do will be something that is just a knee-jerk reaction," Girardi said. "The great thing about this is I have a great group of guys that's very unselfish, and they really want to win. And that's what we're going to do, what we think is best to win."

Always protective of his players, Girardi might be choosing to coddle Rodriguez after watching Joe Torre cause a stir in 2006 by dropping the 14-time All-Star to eighth in the Yankees order against the Detroit Tigers in the first round.

"Sometimes it's just not as easy as just writing a name or taking a guy out, a pitcher out. You have to think about the emotional part," Girardi said. "You always have to think about that as a manager."

A big fan of the numbers, all collated in his ever-present binder, Girardi need not look too deep to see that the 37-year-old Rodriguez is not the same player that has amassed 647 homers, fewer than only Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds.

The third baseman hit only 18 home runs and had a .430 slugging percentage while driving in just 57 runs in 122 games this season, exclusively batting third or fourth for the team that scored the second most runs in the majors with 804.

Rodriguez went a startling 67 at-bats in September without an extra-base hit shortly after returning from a broken left hand. Robinson Cano, who had an RBI double Monday, had nine straight multihit games to finish the season, hitting .615 over that stretch, and many fans want to see him hit in the No. 3 slot.

Granted, Rodriguez is not the only player that's nearly Oh-for-October. Baltimore's Adam Jones is 1 for 8, Washington's Bryce Harper is 1 for 10 and Detroit's Prince Fielder is 1 for 8, but the Tigers are up 2-0.

But none of those stars have as much history as the three-time MVP, either. The highest-paid player in baseball with a contract that can exceed $300 million and has five years remaining, A-list girlfriends, a gossip page fixture.

Ending the Yankees' last two trips to the playoffs with whiffs doesn't help - Game 6 in 2010 ALCS with a caught looking and a swinging strike three against the Tigers last year in the first round. He also hasn't homered in the postseason since hitting six in 2009, but he's fanned 17 times.

Overall, Rodriguez is a career .271 hitter in the postseason with 13 homers and 41 RBIs since making his first playoff appearance in 1995 with Seattle. He is a career .300 hitter in the regular season with 1,950 RBIs.

But Girardi insisted he likes what he sees from Rodriguez. He hit a sharp liner that Baltimore second baseman Robert Andino stopped with a dive and singled before striking out twice as the Yankees tried to rally.

"He squared up two balls," Girardi said. "You look at the ball he hit in the first inning, he squared it up. And then he had the other hard single. Right now I don't have any plans to make any changes."

Rodriguez isn't the only one struggling for the Yankees against the Orioles solid pitching staff. New York went 2 for 8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 in Monday's loss.

Review: Tablet apps fill in gap, won't replace PCs ...

NEW YORK (AP) ? There's nothing I like more than getting some writing done at my favorite neighborhood coffeehouse. It's relaxing, I'm more productive and the place makes a great cappuccino.

But after I bought my iPad about a year ago, I didn't want to go back to schlepping around my laptop, which suddenly seemed so heavy and clunky by comparison.

We all know that tablets are great for watching online videos of frolicking kittens, updating your Facebook status and checking email. But can they really substitute for a laptop when it comes to doing actual work?

To find out, I downloaded software for using word processing and spreadsheets on mobile devices. One works with just iPhones and iPads, while another works with devices running Google's Android system as well. I also test drove an upcoming update to Microsoft Office, one designed to seamlessly link work on PCs, tablets and smartphones.

All of the programs store and access files over the Internet rather than the individual devices. That approach can be pretty handy once you get the hang of it.

Unfortunately, the programs also all involve, well, typing on a tablet. That can be downright painful after a while.

Here's my experience with the three programs:

? Quickoffice

This program is designed to make Apple and Android mobile devices compatible with Office even if the software isn't installed on them. While Microsoft does have a Web-based application that can be accessed on an iPad, it doesn't make a downloadable app for the device yet. Google Inc. bought Quickoffice this summer as part of its attempts to siphon sales away from Microsoft Corp.

The $20 app includes programs similar to Microsoft's Word for documents, Excel for spreadsheets and PowerPoint for presentations. But the programs have some shortcomings and don't mesh perfectly with the Microsoft versions.

For instance, Quickword, the word processing program, doesn't include a spellcheck feature. Rather, it has an autocorrect function similar to those in phone email and messaging programs. While autocorrect is nice, it's not always enough.

When I tried to open a copy of my resume, the margins didn't line up the same way they did in the original copy on my PC, even when I shrunk the document down to fit on the page. Other documents opened just fine.

That said, a file created on Quickword opened nicely on a PC.

There are a variety of ways to transfer files. You can make transfers through a website, use a variety of document-sharing programs such as Google Drive or Dropbox, or sync your device with your desktop computer through iTunes.

The easiest way was simply to email documents to myself.

? iWork

Apple has its own suite of Office-like tablet apps: Pages, for word processing, Numbers, for spreadsheets, and Keynote, for presentations. They cost $10 each, or $30 for the set, making iWork pricier than Quickoffice. But you can buy just one or two of the programs.

The Apple apps also will show up on your iPhone, assuming you want them to, for no extra charge. Quickoffice costs $15 for a separate phone version.

The Apple software is simple, attractively styled and friendly to use.

Pages offers a handy bar at the top that lets you control the size and font of text. There's also a nifty tool in one corner for you to import photos directly from your iPad albums. Photos can be moved, resized and rotated by pinching and twisting your fingers.

For those not adept at page design, the program has 16 templates such as resumes, recipe cards and term papers. And, perhaps most importantly, there's a traditional spellchecker besides autocorrect.

As with Quickoffice, Pages allows you to send files through Internet-based storage systems or transfer them through iTunes. But as with Quickoffice, emailing proved far easier.

What's different is Pages gives you the option of saving your document in the Word format, as a Pages file or as a PDF. Word and PDF versions of Pages-created documents opened easily on my PC. But as expected, the Pages version wasn't compatible (it is with the Pages program on the Mac).

When I made minor changes on my PC and sent them back to my iPad, Pages altered some of my fonts. But the changes were entirely cosmetic.

Both Quickoffice and Pages had a prominent "undo" button, which came in very handy given the error-prone nature of working on a tablet. There were several times chunks of text got deleted or photos got distorted because of my clumsiness. The "undo" buttons came to the rescue.

? Microsoft Office

Working with Microsoft Office on a tablet is much like working with it on a desktop. As a result, there's less of a learning curve than with Quickoffice or iWork. Unfortunately, Microsoft makes it only for devices running Windows ? not for iPads, iPhones or Android devices.

Microsoft hasn't announced a release date for the new version of Office yet, but a subscription for the home version is expected to cost $100 per year and will cover up to five computers and tablets. A small business version will go for $150 per year. Consumers and businesses can also buy the software to install on one computer for $140 to $400, depending on the version.

Microsoft Word comes with a host of handy document templates. Within the program, toolbars at the top let you change fonts, insert photos and do all of the stuff you have come to expect from Word.

For sharing documents or getting them back to your PC, Microsoft offers SkyDrive, its own Internet-based storage system. Documents also can be sent by email through Microsoft Outlook, which is part of the Office suite.

Microsoft's version of Office for the tablet seems best suited for business users who crave seamless connections between their computer and on-the-go tablet.

My husband, who frequently works from home and the road, loved it and said he would be happy if his company started using it. He found the tablet's version of Excel to be quick and easy to use.

I borrowed a Samsung tablet running the upcoming Windows 8 operating software, which comes out Oct. 26. It is a few inches wider than the iPad, giving my husband a much broader view of the spreadsheet he was working on. He also liked SkyDrive's global access and the tablet's version of Microsoft Outlook.

But a casual user who just wants to write a letter or balance a checkbook might not find it as enticing.

Since its inception, the iPad has dominated the tablet market with its easy-to-use setup and minimalist design. It's light and easy to throw into a briefcase or a diaper bag.

The Samsung tablet, though beautiful in many ways, is significantly heavier and has a laptop-like power cord that's bulky compared with the iPad's. There will be other Windows 8 tablets out, including Microsoft's own Surface, but even that will be slightly heavier than the iPad, partly because of its larger screen. That might not be an issue for business types who haul around their work in a rolling briefcase, but it was for me.

Basically, what it boils down to is your needs.

If you're serious about replacing your laptop with a tablet, regardless of what brand, you probably want to invest in a good external keyboard. With both the Apple and Samsung tablets, typing was very awkward, whether I laid them flat, or propped them up at an angle.

For the same reasons, I'm not sure how useful the phone versions of the apps would be. My 63-year-old father, who wears reading glasses, tried to use Quickoffice's spreadsheet program to view documents on his Android phone. But he eventually gave it up because the phone's screen was too small to make it effective.

All three programs do an adequate job of letting you do work on your tablet. Microsoft's does the best job of mimicking what I'm used to on the desktop, but it's also the least useful for iPad owners. If you're sticking with the iPad, it's probably best to pick and choose the apps you need from iWork, which offers more features for the money than Quickoffice.

Whatever you decide, don't expect to shelve your laptop in favor of a tablet or phone anytime soon. These programs fill in a gap, but are far from replacements.

LIMA, Peru (AP) ? A newspaper reported Monday that Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch man who is serving a 28-year-sentence for murdering a young Peruvian woman, says he is going to be a father. His attorney said the inmate does have a conjugal visitor, though he could not confirm she was pregnant.

The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf said Van der Sloot, a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway, himself told it in a telephone call on Saturday that "a test has proved" the pregnancy.

Van der Sloot's attorney Maximo Altez, told The Associated Press that a woman named Leidy Figueroa Uceda "is registered as a conjugal visitor of Joran. She is registered in the visitors books of the Piedras Gordas prison in Lima."

He denied, however, that he had told the newspaper he could confirm the pregnancy.

"I told them I didn't know anything in that respect," he said.

News media in Peru last year identified Figueroa as Van der Sloot's girlfriend, and said they had conceived a son together, but she denied it.

De Telegraaf said Van der Sloot told it that the woman uses the birth control pill but had apparently forgotten to take it and she would not have an abortion due to her Catholic faith. He said he didn't have DNA proof the child is his, but he believes it to be.

Recorded messages on Monday indicated that two telephone numbers registered to Figueroa had been cancelled.

Van der Sloot is a self-described liar, having confessed to killing Holloway and later retracting the confessions. He is the last person known to have seen her alive.

He was convicted for the 2010 robbing and killing of Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel room after meeting her in a nearby casino. He is wanted by authorities in the U.S. for allegedly extorting money from the Holloway family on the promise of revealing the location of her body.

He could resist extradition to the United States, where is wanted in the Holloway case, if he obtains Peruvian nationality. That would be a possibility if he becomes the father of a Peruvian child or if he marries a Peruvian citizen.

Van der Sloot is appealing his conviction.

Eight Legs? Check. Microscopic? Check. Cuddly? Check.

Blogger?s note: I?m still away from the blog for a few weeks. In the meantime, here is another post from the Artful Amoeba archive. It originally appeared on October 4, 2010. I recently read a delightful leaflet on water bears which gave me a whole new appreciate for their anatomy (some of them have armored plates like tanks!) and diversity. Enjoy!

If you had to name one multi-cellular organism that has survived both the vacuum of space and the full onslaught of solar radiation, could you? There is, in fact, one creature that has done this, and it has done so while accomplishing the (apparently) unrelated feat of being incredibly cute. Tell me this video doesn?t make you want to pick one up and give it a belly rub.

This is a little animal called a water bear, or tardigrade. On the mosses, lichens, forest litter, ponds, beaches, snowbanks (and even hot springs) of the world, this little guy plods along, oblivious to the larger world. At just 100 micrometers (.1 mm) to 1.5 mm long, they are cute on paws. Did you notice the little fingers?

Hug me! The caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland meets Heimlich from A Bug's Life? Creative Commons Rpgch

Discovered in the 18th century, these little guys were named water bears for their trundling, bear-like gait ? that is, if can you imagine a bear with *four* pairs of legs and a penchant for shriveling up in winter rather than curling up in a cave. Tardigrade, in fact, just means ?slow walker?.

Water bears exist at a strange junction between the world of the large and the world of the small. They are multicellular organisms with intestines, brains, eyes, fingers, and a chitinous cuticle that they shed, but in many ways they behave like protists, which are also microorganisms but not animals at all. Some tardigrades don?t defecate until they moult. Others don?t mate until that happens. The fertilized eggs stay behind in the moulted skin and incubate there, or sometimes adhere to a nearby surface. They are also eutelic (you-tell-ik), which just means that every water bear grows exactly the same number of cells, and once that number is reached, they can grow larger only by growing those cells. This isn?t uncommon for microbial life. Their mouths are armed with stylets with which they pierce and suck the delicious contents of plant cells, algae, and small invertebrates.

Creative Commons Rpgch

As for their bizarre survivalism streak, withstanding the vacuum and scorching solar radiation of space seems to be a byproduct of their ability to survive dry spells (they can go for a decade without water), just as it is for the bdelloid rotifers, whom I?ve also covered here. They can reversibly enter a state of suspended animation called cryptobiosis, in which their metabolism screeches to a halt and their water content plunges to a hundredth of normal. This helps protect their DNA, and a sugar called trehalose helps protect their membranes. For further information, see here. In 1997, they were launched into low-earth orbit and survived the vacuum of space for 10 days. Yes, Tardigrades . . . in . . . Space! Several went on to lay and hatch eggs normally. Interestingly, there is even a sci-fi sounding word for their state of suspended animation: when so ensconced, they are called a ?tun?.

Taxonomically, water bears are most closely related to arthropods, or all the crustaceans and insects of the world, and onychophorans, the velvet worms. Biologists would say they are one of the bilaterian crown groups, or one of the earliest lineages to split into their own group after animals developed mirror-image symmetry. Other early-diverging animals either had no symmetry (sponges) or were radially symmetrical (jellyfish et al.) You can check out their neighborhood of the life family tree here (look for tardigrada). You may notice they?re also in a group called ?ecdysozoa?, which is just a code word for ?all the organisms that moult exoskeletons?, which actually does seem to be a true, historical, one-time evolutionary inovation (i.e., synapomorphy in bio-speak), and thus make it a taxonomically valid group.

Final cool factoid: few tardigrades have fossilized, but of those that have, one was named Beorn leggi, which will be delightful to those of you who have read The Hobbit. And in case you were wondering if someone actually had the chutzpah to do it, yes, yes someone did. It was screaming to be done. Behold the plush tardigrade.

Spain doesn't need help, euro zone ministers say

LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) - Euro zone finance ministers delivered a united defense of Spain on Monday, saying the country was taking steps to overhaul its economy, funding itself successfully in the financial markets and did not need a bailout, at least for now.

Arriving at a meeting in Luxembourg to discuss Greece and Spain and to inaugurate the euro zone's permanent bailout mechanism, the ESM, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Madrid had made clear it wanted no help.

"Spain needs no aid program. Spain is doing everything necessary, in fiscal policy, in structural reforms," he told reporters as he arrived for a gathering that will also discuss plans to establish a single supervisor for euro zone banks.

"Spain has a problem with its banks as a consequence of the real estate bubble of the past years," he said. "That's why Spain is getting (EU) help with banking recapitalization."

Luxembourg Finance Minister Luc Frieden took the same line but added that if Spain were to make a request for aid beyond the 100 billion euros already earmarked to recapitalize its banks, it would be examined.

"I think we should deal with such a request when it comes, but so far the Spanish government is undertaking reforms which go in the right direction," he said.

Finance ministers agreed in June to provide up to 100 billion euros for Spain's banks, many of which are weighed down with bad property loans and need to be recapitalized.

An independent audit has shown the banks need around 40 billion euros, less than originally expected, a result Austria's finance minister, Maria Fekter, said was positive.

"We have the banking application from Spain," Fekter said. "We are likely to hear today that this 100 billion euros is not all needed, that Spain needs significantly less."

Many in the financial markets are convinced Spain will not be able to meet its sovereign funding needs at an affordable cost without euro zone and European Central Bank support, especially with several of its regions requiring a bailout from Madrid.

A euro zone source said ministers may also discuss Spain's 2013 budget, outlined last month, which the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission both believe is based on an over-optimistic forecast of a 0.5 percent economic contraction next year. The IMF forecast of a 1.2 percent recession may be revised further downwards on Tuesday.

NO MOVES ON GREECE

As well as Spain, ministers will discuss the situation in Greece, where intense negotiations continue between the government and the 'troika' of inspectors from the Commission, the ECB and the IMF over budget cuts for 2013-2014.

But Jean-Claude Juncker, the chairman of the Eurogroup, said no developments on Greece, which has fallen behind on its second bailout program, were likely at least until the troika finishes a report on the country's debt situation. That report is now expected in early November.

"I don't think that we will have any major decisions on Greece," Juncker said. Asked whether a decision on Greece could be expected soon, he replied: "Hope never dies."

Monday's meeting will also discuss plans for the ECB to be given responsibility for supervising all eurozone banks and the idea of creating a single budget for eurozone countries, issues that will be discussed further by eurozone and EU leaders at a summit in Brussels on October 18-19.

But little formal progress is expected, with questions unresolved about how many of the eurozone's 6,000 banks the ECB will be charged with overseeing and whether it will be able to start its new role from January next year.

Instead, the only firm action taken on Monday was the unveiling of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), a 500 billion euro, rescue mechanism for the 17 euro zone countries.

The ESM, which replaces the temporary EFSF, will be used to lend to distressed euro zone sovereigns in return for strict fiscal and structural reforms that aim to put economies that have lost investor trust back on track.

"The start of the ESM marks a historic milestone in shaping the future of the European monetary union," the fund's chief executive, Klaus Regling, told reporters

"The euro area now is equipped with a permanent and effective firewall, which of course is a crucial component in our strategy to ensure financial stability in the euro zone."

The fund's lending capacity will be based on 80 billion euros of paid-in capital and 620 billion of callable capital, against which the ESM will borrow money on the market to lend it on to governments cut off from sustainable market funding.

From Monday it has a capacity of 200 billion euros and it will reach its full capacity gradually by 2014.

San Francisco 49ers vs Buffalo Bills: Where to Watch Live Online Stream, Betting Odds, Prediction, and Preview for Sunday?s NFL Game

The game begins at 4:25 p.m. EDT and will be shown by FOX, or watch a live stream online by purchasing NFL Sunday Ticket Max.

San Francisco recovered from their disappointing Week Three loss by throttling the New York Jets for a 34-0 road victory last week, and have outscored opponents 104-65 this season.

The 49ers created four New York turnovers, including a 51-yard fumble return by cornerback Carlos Rogers, and? held the Jets to 145 total yards, and rushed for 245 yards and three touchdowns.

Running back Frank Gore recorded 62 yards on 21 attempts, and quarterback Alex Smith was a steady 12-for-21 for 143 yards.

San Francisco now takes on a Buffalo team that squandered a 14-point lead and lost 52-28 to the New England Patriots.

Buffalo gave up six straight touchdowns in the second half, and 580 total yards, after opening up a 21-7 lead in the third quarter off a 68-yard touchdown catch by receiver Donald Jones.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw four interceptions on the day, including two in the fourth quarter while the Bills attempted a comeback. He would finish 22-for-39 for 350 yards and four touchdown passes.

Last Sunday was the first game of the season for the Bills to record less than 100 yards rushing, with running back C.J. Spiller leading Buffalo with 33 yards on the ground.

The Bills splurged in free agency on defensive end Mario Williams, but the results have been inconsistent at best. Buffalo?s defense is still near the bottom of the NFL, ranking 23rd in passing and 28th in rushing defense.

Betting Odds: San Francisco is favored by 10 points; Over/Under: 44.5 points

Prediction: Fitzpatrick must avoid forcing his passes if the Bills are down early or San Francisco will capitalize and pick him off. San Francisco will continue to run the ball and play top notch defense in a winning effort.

Predicted Score: San Francisco 24, Buffalo 17

World Bank cuts Asia growth outlook for this year

(AP) ? The World Bank cut its growth forecast for Asia on Monday in a new sign of the impact of weakening global demand and warned China's cooling economy faces the risk of a "more pronounced slowdown."

The bank cut this year's growth outlook for developing Asia-Pacific economies to 7.2 percent, down from its May forecast of 7.6 percent. The bank cut its forecast for China, the region's biggest economy, to 7.7 percent from May's 8.2 percent.

"In a fragile external environment, the economy in the East Asia and Pacific region continues to slow down," the bank said in a report. "The risk remains of a more pronounced slowdown in China than currently expected, while commodity exporters are at particular risk of a global slowdown."

The bank cited weak global demand due to the lackluster U.S. recovery and Europe's recession. It said Europe's debt crisis still is a "major risk," followed by the U.S. "fiscal cliff" ? a mix of tax and spending cuts due to take effect at year's end that might depress growth.

Growth in China has slowed largely due to government controls imposed to cool an overheated economy and inflation but also has been hurt by weak demand for Chinese exports. Growth fell to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the quarter ending in June and officials including President Hu Jintao say it might decline further before recovering.

"China's slowdown this year has been significant, and some fear it could still accelerate," the World Bank said.

Commodity exporters could be most at risk in case of a renewed global slowdown, the report said. They include Mongolia, Laos, Timor Leste, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

The region is relatively well-positioned to weather a European crisis or global slowdown, the bank said. It noted most have well-capitalized banks, modest government deficits and large financial reserves.

Excluding China, the region's economic output should grow 5.5 percent this year, the bank said. It forecast worldwide growth of 2.3 percent this year, rising to 2.6 percent in 2013.

Indonesia should achieve 6.1 percent growth this year, while Malaysia grows 4.8 percent and the Philippines by 5 percent, the bank said. It forecast Thailand's growth at 4.5 percent and Vietnam at 5.2 percent.

"For 2013, growth is expected to pick up in most of the region's other developing economies, where domestic demand remains robust," the bank said.

Trade-driven Asian economies need to rebalance away from reliance on foreign demand for their exports and encourage consumer spending, the World Bank said.

"The subdued outlook for advanced economies continues to put a premium on domestic demand, and thus rebalancing remains important for most countries in the region," the report said.

Brooklyn Songwriter Will Stratton Battles Unexpected Cancer at 25 ...

Will StrattonNika States

The second time I interviewed Will Stratton, I sat next to his hospital bed while he received chemotherapy through IVs. Despite the whirring and churning machines, Will seemed peaceful. He talked about his plans for recovering in the suburbs of Seattle and his hopes for a new record after this is all over. I realized that even knowledge of the worst is better than living with uncertainty.

As I left the hospital, the crispness of fall seemed in tune with the new brightness I saw in Will's countenance: A sense of hope that was lacking when I interviewed him only weeks before in August. He has just been diagnosed with stage three testicular cancer, that had spread to his liver and one of his lungs. Yet somehow he looked happier in his hospital bed than he did sitting across from me at a small rickety table in his Red Hook, Brooklyn apartment.

Stream "You Divers"

"I don't spend a lot of time really carousing like I did when I first got to New York and I don't drink very much. I think the longer that I've lived in the city I've had a slightly more monastic lifestyle," he said in our initial interview. "I believe that my time in New York is numbered, or that I at least need an extended break. I need to go to the countryside and figure out a new lifestyle."

I was first drawn to Will's music because of its vibrancy and physicality; this desire for open spaces and a return to nature made sense. His latest album Post-Empire is a great example of where folk music should turn in order to reinvent itself for new generations. The record is full of traces of uncertainty and obscured sight, complemented with tension filled guitar-playing and splashes of strings, all elements imbued with new feeling in light of Will's mental state.

At the hospital, he admitted that he knew something was seriously wrong for close to 10 months, but something -- fear, pride, uncertainty -- stopped him from finding out for sure.

"There's so many reasons that I didn't go before I did. None of them good. But some of them kind of caught up in the kind of fucked-up-artistic self-image bullshit that adolescence and Brooklyn gets sucked into."

Funny thing is, he strikes one as the least likely to possess the hubris of the artist. Will is as mild-mannered as Clark Kent until he picks up a guitar, and reveals his alter ego can use the instrument with the ferocity of a weapon. Stratton is a self-taught acoustic guitarist in the vein of American masters like John Fahey, Leo Kottke and British legend Nick Drake.

Like Drake, Strattons's lyrics are malleable, shifting surfaces, and they must be in order to keep up with his fluid guitar picking. His music is inescapably colored by intricate guitar tones, but also by cacophonies of female vocals. Amelia Meath of Mountain Man and the equally talented Maia Friedman of BOBBY (both of Red Hook) lend their wing-like vocals to Post-Empire.

"For me, the female voice in Post-Empire is synonymous with epiphany, or light. So whenever there's a female voice, she's usually not singing by herself, but she's kind of highlighting the text in parts that I think are particularly important, or need that extra emphasis in order to shine through."

Will recorded Post-Empire on analogue tape in Greenpoint's Rare Book Room studio with Nicolas Vernhes, an engineer who's worked with the likes of the Dirty Projectors, Spoon and Cat Power. In fact, Will has had his fair share of collaborations with popular artists. While recording his first album in Astoria, Queens, Sufjan Stevens agreed to play the oboe for two of his songs.

"There was the idea that a couple of my songs could use some oboe, which I thought was an awesome idea. And also I was a huge fan, and still am, of Sufjan and his arranging work especially. I think he's probably the most brilliant arranger of the last few generations. So Sufjan listened to the songs and I think was okay enough with them that he decided he could do some oboe stuff," Will explained.

Though he's only 25, Stratton has already released four full length records. I asked him if worried he'd ever get burnt out, but the answer was a resounding no.

"As soon as I'm done with the record I go through a sort of mourning period where I'm like 'What am I going to do?" and I don't create anything for a while. Then as soon as that's over I become kind of obsessed with it and what the next record or the next musical project is going to look like or sound like, so now I'm kind of at that stage."

In light of his growing health concerns, his answer takes on new meaning. Despite the delay, Will's chance at recovery is strong, a clear broad stroke of hope with little room for doubt. After an initial surgery, doctors became extremely optimistic about treating the singer's cancer.

"It's very scary sounding, but, the upside is that this type of cancer is really responsive to chemotherapy. We're expecting to see positive results pretty quickly. And what the doctors keep telling me is that this cancer is not only highly treatable, it's curable."

With the tumult of uncertainty behind him, Will is finally able to focus on his recovery, but music is still at the back of his mind. His eyes fully light up as he talks about the record he can make post-cancer.

"The thing is, amidst all this, I'm already thinking of the record I can make about this experience. There's a four track recorder at my parents house, a Tascam 414 Portastudio which is the first thing I ever recorded music on. I'm imagining the record I can make while I recover. I think it will be a happy record. Simple."

Rough economy in clear view for Obama on the road

(AP) ? Sometimes all President Barack Obama has to do is look out the window to get a firsthand look at the country's economic woes.

This week in this town, the presidential motorcade speeds past opulent homes lining manmade Lake Las Vegas as he heads to the sprawling luxury development where he's preparing for the upcoming debates with Mitt Romney. But many houses here are empty, victims of Nevada's foreclosure crisis, and others are worth far less than their purchase price.

Farther down the road, a golf course is abandoned ? one of two shuttered in the neighborhood. A sparkling shopping center off the main drag has no shops to fill its storefronts.

And if Obama didn't get the message of pocketbook pain, the marquee at a business ? one that is open if perhaps not thriving ? spells it out: "President Obama, we need lower taxes."

Views like these from the window of his fortified Chevy Suburban or armored limousine give Obama an unvarnished look both at the country he runs and the challenges he faces in winning a second term amid a struggling economic recovery.

The president, often cloistered in the White House, says seeing the facts on the ground ? in the battleground states that will decide the election ? is an opportunity he relishes.

"It's good to get out of Washington," Obama frequently tells crowds on the campaign trail, whether he's in an economically-booming community or a struggling one in a nation where the unemployment rate hasn't dropped below 8 percent since January 2009 ? the first month of his presidency.

Of course, the president sees much more than economic realities from the black limos and SUVs that ferry him to and from events several times a week in contested states from Colorado to New Hampshire to Florida. Clusters of protesters carrying signs castigating him and fans countering with expressions of thanks are staples along most motorcade routes.

Aides say the president takes notice of the world outside his motorcade as it speeds through the streets of big cities, small towns and leafy suburbs. He's particularly struck, they say, by the people who line the streets to watch his caravan pass. He insists on waving to the crowds through the tinted windows, even while he's on the phone or being briefed by advisers ? and even if onlookers can't see him clearly.

During bus tours, Obama often points to aides when there are large pockets of supporters standing along the road. The driver slows down and Obama moves to the front so he can get a better look, and so the crowd can get a better look at him as well.

On Monday, crowds lined Lake Mead Parkway in Henderson as the president passed by on his way to a campaign rally in nearby Las Vegas. Many snapped photos or took videos on their cellphones. One young girl waved a small American flag, while an elderly couple waved enthusiastically to the presidential procession.

Small children peered over concrete walls separating their homes from the street and families gathered on their front lawns to watch as the motorcade zipped through the largely Hispanic, working-class neighborhood where Obama was heading to speak.

His mere presence makes waves, part of the reason why Obama chose to hold his intensive debate preparations in Nevada. It's one of a few states that will determine the outcome of the White House race, and aides are mindful that something as simple as seeing the president's motorcade can build voter enthusiasm and drive local media coverage ahead of the election.

Here, like elsewhere, Obama is getting plenty of reminders about the looming election.

An electronic billboard flashes information about voting, urging residents to register by the state's Oct. 6 deadline. Signs for local and state candidates dot the desert landscape.

At times, Obama also comes face to face with Romney backers.

Earlier this summer, some residents in Hunts Point, Wash., held Romney signs as Obama traveled to a fundraiser in the neighborhood. At another point, during a fundraiser in a largely Republican neighborhood in Tampa, Fla., several neighbors planted Romney signs in their front yard. Others made their own signs with messages for the president.

"Free markets, not free loaders," read one sign at the home across the street from Obama's event. "The bro has got to go," said another.

Indeed, there are often protests, from Republicans, Occupy Wall Street activists, even medical marijuana advocates.

But sometimes the White House tries to make sure those gatherings aren't in Obama's line of sight.

For example, hundreds of medical marijuana supporters flocked to a theater in Oakland, Calif., where Obama was headlining a July fundraiser. With law enforcement keeping the protesters confined to the front of the theater, Obama's motorcade simply dropped him off on the side of the building, ensuring he never caught a glimpse of the crowd.

Sticky paper offers cheap, easy solution for paper-based diagnostics

ScienceDaily (Oct. 2, 2012) ? A current focus in global health research is to make medical tests that are not just cheap, but virtually free. One such strategy is to start with paper -- one of humanity's oldest technologies -- and build a device like a home-based pregnancy test that might work for malaria, diabetes or other diseases.

A University of Washington bioengineer recently developed a way to make regular paper stick to medically interesting molecules. The work produced a chemical trick to make paper-based diagnostics using plain paper, the kind found at office supply stores around the world.

"We wanted to go for the simplest, cheapest starting material, and give it more capability," said Daniel Ratner, a UW assistant professor of bioengineering and lead author of the paper recently published in the American Chemical Society journal Langmuir. "We also wanted to make the system as independent of the end applications as possible, something any researcher could plug into."

Many paper-based diagnostics are made from nitrocellulose, a sticky membrane used in pregnancy tests and by medical researchers to detect proteins, DNA or antibodies in the human immune system.

Ratner hopes to replace that specialized membrane with cheap, ubiquitous paper, and to use it for any type of medical test -- not just the big, biological molecules.

The UW technique uses minimal equipment or know-how. The researchers used a cheap, industrial solvent called divinyl sulfone that can be bought by the gallon and has been used for decades as an adhesive. Ratner's group discovered they could dilute the chemical in water, carefully control the acidity, then pour it into a Ziploc bag and add a stack of paper, shake for a couple of hours, and finally rinse the paper and let it dry.

The dried paper feels smooth to the touch but is sticky to all kinds of chemicals that could be of medical interest: proteins, antibodies and DNA, for example, as well as sugars and the small-molecule drugs used to treat most medical conditions.

"We want to develop something to not just ask a single question but ask many personal health questions," Ratner said. "'Is there protein in the urine? Is this person diabetic? Do they have malaria or influenza?'"

To test their idea, the researchers ran the treated paper through an inkjet printer where the cartridge ink had been replaced with biomolecules, in this case a small sugar called galactose that attaches to human cells. They printed the biomolecules onto the sticky paper in an invisible pattern. Exposing that paper to fluorescent ricin, a poison that sticks to galactose, showed that the poison was present.

Now that they have proven their concept, Ratner said, they hope other groups will use the paper to develop actual diagnostic tests.

Leading proponents of paper-based diagnostics include the UW's Paul Yager, a professor of bioengineering who leads the Microfluidics 2.0 initiative, and George Whitesides, a chemistry professor at Harvard University. Ratner's group is working with a graduate student in Yager's lab to use the paper to print patterns of switchable networks.
