At National Parks, where are all the young people?

The average age of visitors has skyrocketed over the past few decades, and some fear the future of these national treasures could be in jeopardy. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

By Gabe Gutierrez, NBC News correspondent?

ESTES PARK, Colo. --?At Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado,?rangers are seeing more than green this spring. They're also noticing a little more gray.

The average visitor to national parks is getting older.

Cyclist John O'Malley, 61, of Summit County, Colo.,?has enjoyed the trails for almost half a century.

"You do get close to nature," Malley said.

But apparently, not everyone shares that?fondness anymore.

Back in 1996, at Death Valley National Park, almost a third of visitors were in their 20s. But in the last few years, that number has dropped to just 11 percent at Yosemite and six percent at Yellowstone, according to?a?University of Idaho analysis of Park Service attendance figures.

At Rocky Mountain National Park, the average age of visitors has risen to 46.??

"Right now, we see a lot of youth not coming to the parks," said Larry Frederick, a park ranger?for more than 15 years who has noticed the changing demographics. "I think there a lot of distractions right now for young people."

Frederick said the average age of visitors used to be late 20s and early 30s.

Overall attendance at national parks has dropped only slightly in the last two years. But with fewer young visitors, some conservationists worry about what could happen in the decades to come.

"If we do not do a better job of inviting young people to the national parks and providing the funding to be able to do that the parks will become less relevant," said Tom Kiernan, president of??the?National Parks Conservation Association.

So the?Park?Service is mounting a campaign to attract children and young adults -- the Connecting People and Parks program. On a recent Saturday this spring, dozens of kids toured a park outside Washington, D.C.?

"They get excited [and] they discover things," said Jon Jarvis, the director of the National Park Service.?"For them to know that not only they can come back, but they own this place, this is their park."

The Washington Post / Washington Post/Getty Images

Nearly 400 national parks can be found all across America, and feature breathtaking vistas, rock formations millions of years old, and more.

Back in Colorado, the Schafer family?from Cleveland, Ohio, is bucking the trend.?Three generations chose to enjoy their family vacation this year at a national park. While they are not part of the Park Service's recent outreach program, they fully support it.

"It's sad to see that the next generation will forget this,"?Jamie Schafer said, as she looked across a stretch of mountaintops.

She and her husband drove their kids and grandkids all the way from Ohio. Their goal: to leave their?family's computers behind and nurture their love of nature for a lifetime.

"You can't capture it on a picture," her?12-year-old son, Tobin, said. "You have to be there to see it."

Charles Taylor Sentenced: Judge Gives Former Liberian President To 50 Years In Jail

LEIDSCHENDAM, Netherlands -- Judges at an international war crimes court sentenced former Liberian President Charles Taylor to 50 years in prison Wednesday, saying he was responsible for "some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history."

The 64-year-old warlord-turned-president is the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II and judges said they had no precedent when deciding his sentence.

Taylor will serve his sentence in a British jail. His lawyers, however, are expected to appeal his convictions and that will likely keep him in a jail in The Hague, Netherlands, for months.

Taylor was convicted last month on 11 charges of aiding and abetting the rebels who went on a savage rampage during the decade-long war that ended in 2002 with more than 50,000 dead.

Prosecutors say he funneled arms, ammunition and other supplies in return for "blood diamonds" mined using slave labor.

Presiding Judge Richard Lussick told Taylor his crimes were of the "utmost gravity in terms of scale and brutality."

"The lives of many more innocent civilians in Sierra Leone were lost or destroyed as a direct result of his actions," Lussick said.

Taylor showed no emotion as Lussick handed down what will effectively be a life sentence.

Prosecutors had asked judges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone to impose an 80-year sentence; Taylor's lawyers urged judges to hand down a sentence that offered him some hope of release before he dies.

Lussick said an 80-year sentence would have been excessive as Taylor was convicted of aiding and abetting crimes and not direct involvement.

But the judge added that Taylor was "in a class of his own" compared to others convicted by the United Nations-backed court.

"The special status of Mr. Taylor as a head of state puts him in a different category of offenders for the purpose of sentencing," Lussick said.

At a sentencing hearing earlier this month, Taylor expressed "deepest sympathy" for the suffering of victims of atrocities in Sierra Leone, but insisted he had acted to help stabilize the West Africa region and claimed he never knowingly assisted in the commission of crimes.

"What I did...was done with honor," he said. "I was convinced that unless there was peace in Sierra Leone, Liberia would not be able to move forward."

However, judges ruled that Taylor armed and supplied the rebels in full knowledge they would likely use weapons to commit terrible crimes, in exchange for payments of "blood diamonds" often obtained by slave labor.

Prosecutors said there was no reason for leniency, given the extreme nature of the crimes, Taylor's "greed" and misuse of his position of power.

"The purposely cruel and savage crimes committed included public executions and amputations of civilians, the display of decapitated heads at checkpoints, the killing and public disembowelment of a civilian whose intestines were then stretched across the road to make a check point, public rapes of women and girls, and people burned alive in their homes," prosecutor Brenda Hollis wrote in a brief appealing for the 80-year sentence.

Taylor stepped down and fled into exile in Nigeria after being indicted by the court in 2003. He was finally arrested and sent to the Netherlands in 2006.

While the Sierra Leone court is based in that country's capital, Freetown, Taylor's trial is being staged in Leidschendam, a suburb of The Hague, for fear holding it in West Africa could destabilize the region.

'Fifty Shades Of Grey': Stephenie Meyer Speaks Out

'Twilight' author tells MTV News that E L James' fan fiction bestseller is 'really not my genre, not my thing.'
By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Photo: The Writer's Coffee Shop

"Fifty Shades of Grey" seems to be on everyone's mind lately. How will they make NC-17 reading material into an R-rated film? Who will take on the role of the timid Ana Steele? And, most importantly, who will be cast as Christian Grey, the sexy leading man? Those all are important questions, but the one query we were itching to have answered is: What does "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer think of the book? E L James' trilogy started out as "Twilight" fan fiction, after all.

When MTV News caught up with the writer on the set of "The Host," she told us she doesn't know much about "Fifty Shades," but she supports James in her endeavor.

"I haven't read it. I mean, that's really not my genre, not my thing," she said with a laugh. "I've heard about it; I haven't really gotten into it that much. Good on her — she's doing well. That's great!"

"Fifty Shades" follows the sadomasochistic affair of college graduate Ana Steele and dominant billionaire Christian Grey. Their relationship begins as a purely physical attraction, but as they become engrossed in each other and start to fall in love, Ana realizes Christian's past might not be something she wants to uncover. Christian represents Edward Cullen, a brooding, self-deprecating and impossibly good-looking man with a few secrets, while Ana is an adaptation of the clumsy and shy Bella Swan. Without Meyer's novel, "Fifty Shades" might not exist.

"It might not exist in the exact form that it's in," Meyer said. "Obviously, [James] had a story in her, and so it would've come out in some other way."

But James isn't the only writer who gained Meyer's support. "The Host" author mentioned being a "super fan" of Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games."

"I'm just excited for anything that they do," she said. "I was really excited they were turning it into a movie. Of course, then you have that, 'Are they gonna screw it up?' 'cause it's so awesome, but they didn't; it's awesome. I'm really looking forward to the next one. I have fingers crossed for a couple of casting choices."

Once she revealed she had actors in mind, we had to ask her pick for the beloved District 4 tribute, Finnick Odair: "Taylor Kitsch," she said, stating her choice. "Is there another option?"

When our correspondent Josh Horowitz mentioned he spoke to Kitsch, and the actor said he's not interested in the role, Meyer was more than a little disappointed, saying, "You're breaking my heart."

But when an evil emerges working on destroying the balance, this evil starts by killing the current 4 maidens. In an attempt to bring back balance, 4 new maiden girls are chossen to try and finish the job of the fallen maidens. Each Maiden is given a "knight", or just someone to protect her, to help htem on their journy into becoming the Song Maiden of their chossen element.

That's the basic, let me know what youa ll think.

A new study combining the latest archaeological evidence with state-of-the-art geoscience technologies provides evidence that climate change was a key ingredient in the collapse of the great Indus or Harappan Civilization almost 4000 years ago. The study also resolves a long-standing debate over the source and fate of the Sarasvati, the sacred river of Hindu mythology.

Once extending more than 1 million square kilometers across the plains of the Indus River from the Arabian Sea to the Ganges, over what is now Pakistan, northwest India and eastern Afghanistan, the Indus civilization was the largestbut least knownof the first great urban cultures that also included Egypt and Mesopotamia. Like their contemporaries, the Harappans, named for one of their largest cities, lived next to rivers owing their livelihoods to the fertility of annually watered lands.

"We reconstructed the dynamic landscape of the plain where the Indus civilization developed 5200 years ago, built its cities, and slowly disintegrated between 3900 and 3000 years ago," said Liviu Giosan, a geologist with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and lead author of the study published the week of May 28 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "Until now, speculations abounded about the links between this mysterious ancient culture and its life-giving mighty rivers."

Today, numerous remains of the Harappan settlements are located in a vast desert region far from any flowing river. In contrast to Egypt and Mesopotamia, which have long been part of the Western classical canon, this amazingly complex culture in South Asia with a population that at its peak may have reached 10 percent of the world's inhabitants, was completely forgotten until 1920's. Since then, a flurry of archaeological research in Pakistan and India has uncovered a sophisticated urban culture with myriad internal trade routes and well-established sea links with Mesopotamia, standards for building construction, sanitation systems, arts and crafts, and a yet-to-be deciphered writing system.

"We considered that it is high time for a team of interdisciplinary scientists to contribute to the debate about the enigmatic fate of these people," added Giosan.

The research was conducted between 2003 and 2008 in Pakistan, from the coast of the Arabian Sea into the fertile irrigated valleys of Punjab and the northern Thar Desert. The international team included scientists from the U.S., U.K., Pakistan, India, and Romania with specialties in geology, geomorphology, archaeology, and mathematics. By combining satellite photos and topographic data collected by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), the researchers prepared and analyzed digital maps of landforms constructed by the Indus and neighboring rivers, which were then probed in the field by drilling, coring, and even manually-dug trenches. Collected samples were used to determine the sediments' origins, whether brought in and shaped by rivers or wind, and their age, in order to develop a chronology of landscape changes.

"Once we had this new information on the geological history, we could re-examine what we know about settlements, what crops people were planting and when, and how both agriculture and settlement patterns changed," said co-author Dorian Fuller, an archaeologist with University College London. "This brought new insights into the process of eastward population shift, the change towards many more small farming communities, and the decline of cities during late Harappan times."

The new study suggests that the decline in monsoon rains led to weakened river dynamics, and played a critical role both in the development and the collapse of the Harappan culture, which relied on river floods to fuel their agricultural surpluses.

From the new research, a compelling picture of 10,000 years of changing landscapes emerges. Before the plain was massively settled, the wild and forceful Indus and its tributaries flowing from the Himalaya cut valleys into their own deposits and left high "interfluvial" stretches of land between them. In the east, reliable monsoon rains sustained perennial rivers that crisscrossed the desert leaving behind their sedimentary deposits across a broad region.

Among the most striking features the researchers identified is a mounded plain, 10 to 20 meters high, over 100 kilometers wide, and running almost 1000 kilometers along the Indus, they call the "Indus mega-ridge," built by the river as it purged itself of sediment along its lower course.

"At this scale, nothing similar has ever been described in the geomorphological literature," said Giosan. "The mega-ridge is a surprising indicator of the stability of Indus plain landscape over the last four millennia. Remains of Harappan settlements still lie at the surface of the ridge, rather than being buried underground."

Mapped on top of the vast Indo-Gangetic Plain, the archaeological and geological data shows instead that settlements bloomed along the Indus from the coast to the hills fronting the Himalayas, as weakened monsoons and reduced run-off from the mountains tamed the wild Indus and its Himalayan tributaries enough to enable agriculture along their banks.

"The Harappans were an enterprising people taking advantage of a window of opportunity a kind of "Goldilocks civilization," said Giosan. "As monsoon drying subdued devastating floods, the land nearby the rivers - still fed with water and rich silt - was just right for agriculture. This lasted for almost 2,000 years, but continued aridification closed this favorable window in the end."

In another major finding, the researchers believe they have settled a long controversy about the fate of a mythical river, the Sarasvati. The Vedas, ancient Indian scriptures composed in Sanskrit over 3000 years ago, describe the region west of the Ganges as "the land of seven rivers." Easily recognizable are the Indus and its current tributaries, but the Sarasvati, portrayed as "surpassing in majesty and might all other waters" and "pure in her course from mountains to the ocean," was lost. Based on scriptural descriptions, it was believed that the Sarasvati was fed by perennial glaciers in the Himalayas. Today, the Ghaggar, an intermittent river that flows only during strong monsoons and dissipates into the desert along the dried course of Hakra valley, is thought to best approximate the location of the mythic Sarasvati, but its Himalayan origin and whether it was active during Vedic times remain controversial.

Archaeological evidence supports the Ghaggar-Hakra as the location of intensive settlement during Harappan times. The geological evidencesediments, topography shows that rivers were indeed sizable and highly active in this region, but most likely due to strong monsoons. There is no evidence of wide incised valleys like along the Indus and its tributaries and there is no cut-through, incised connections to either of the two nearby Himalayan-fed rivers of Sutlej and Yamuna. The new research argues that these crucial differences prove that the Sarasvati (Ghaggar-Hakra) was not Himalayan-fed, but a perennial monsoon-supported watercourse, and that aridification reduced it to short seasonal flows.

By 3900 years ago, their rivers drying, the Harappans had an escape route to the east toward the Ganges basin, where monsoon rains remained reliable.

"We can envision that this eastern shift involved a change to more localized forms of economy: smaller communities supported by local rain-fed farming and dwindling streams," said Fuller. "This may have produced smaller surpluses, and would not have supported large cities, but would have been reliable."

Such a system was not favorable for the Indus civilization, which had been built on bumper crop surpluses along the Indus and the Ghaggar-Hakra rivers in the earlier wetter era. This dispersal of population meant that there was no longer a concentration of workforce to support urbanism. "Thus cities collapsed, but smaller agricultural communities were sustainable and flourished. Many of the urban arts, such as writing, faded away, but agriculture continued and actually diversified," said Fuller.

"An amazing amount of archaeological work has been accumulating over the last decades, but it's never been linked properly to the evolution of the fluvial landscape. We now see landscape dynamics as the crucial link between climate change and people," said Giosan. "Today the Indus system feeds the largest irrigation scheme in the world, immobilizing the river in channels and behind dams. If the monsoon were to increase in a warming world, as some predict, catastrophic floods such as the humanitarian disaster of 2010, would turn the current irrigation system, designed for a tamer river, obsolete."

In Israel, More than Just Familiar Themes for ?New Year of the Trees?

Today is the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat, a historically minor Jewish holiday that has gained momentum and become an important day in Israeli history. While we all know that Rosh Hashana is the official new year for the Jewish calendar, today?s holiday of ?Tu Bishvat? is celebrated as the ?New Year of the Trees.? A symbolic day of revival and rejuvenation, it is often chosen as the inauguration date for Israel?s major institutions. For example, Israel?s parliament, the Knesset, celebrates its birthday on Tu Bishvat. The cornerstone-laying of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem took place on Tu Bishvat in 1918, and the Technion in Haifa, which was recently announced to be partnering with Cornell to build New York City?s new high tech campus, was inaugurated on Tu Bishvat in 1925.

In a sense, the entire State of Israel, founded in 1948, embodies the spirit of Tu Bishvat. The sprawling forests in Israel are largely the result of afforestation efforts by organizations like the Jewish National Fund, which, thanks to planting over 240 million new trees, made Israel one of the only country in the world who entered the 21st century with a net increase in trees over the last century. While everyone knows the history of Jerusalem and its amazing history, perhaps it is Israel?s second largest city, Tel Aviv, that tells the story of ?new Israel.?

Tel Aviv, famous today for its party scene and restaurants all situated next to gorgeous Mediterranean beaches, would have been unrecognizable a century ago. In the early 20th century, the area which is now Tel Aviv was nothing put sand dunes as far as the eye could see. When the population began to boom in the 1920s, Tel Aviv?s city council began to think about planning the new city to be able to expand by Patrick Geddes, a Scottish botanist. Today, Tel Aviv?s green imprint is evidenced every time you walk down its most famous streets, like Rothschild Boulevard, which features a ?green belt.? This Saturday, February 10th, there will even be a special English-language tour of Tel Aviv?s ?green? avenues.

Of course, like any good holiday, there needs to be delicious food! Think of it as a passover Seder, substituting matzoh and brisket with Israeli fruit and nuts. Check out this recipe below for an almond and orange braid (makes about 2 7? braids), courtesy of Haaretz.

Ingredients:

1/2 lb finely almond flour, or finely ground almonds

4 1/2 oz. granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds (optional)

1 egg

2 egg yolks

4 tablespoons chopped candied orange peel (or grated zest of one orange)

2 sheets of puff pastry, 1.1 lb., thawed in the fridge over night.

1 tablespoon coarse sugar

Directions:

1. Put the almond flour, granulated sugar, fennel seeds, egg and one of the yolks in the food processor and run until it forms a dough.

2. Transfer into a bowl and knead the orange peel in.

3. Turn the oven to 375 degrees. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper.

4. Spoon the almond filling lengthwise down the center of the pastry. Cut slits 1 inch apart from the 2 sides of the pastry rectangle to within 1/2 inch of the almond filling. Starting at one end, fold the pastry strips over the almond mixture, alternating sides, to cover the almond filling.

5. Mix the second egg yolk with a tablespoon of water. Brush the pastry with the egg yolk mixture. Sprinkle with the coarse sugar. Place the pastry onto the baking sheet.

6. Bake for 25 to 30 minute, until the braid is puffed and the top is golden. Serve warm with ice cream on the side.

From The Dallas Voice:? http://www.dallasvoice.com/gay-s-texas-senior-allowed-wear-cross-dress-graduation-10115581.html

24 May 2012

South Texas high school administrators have agreed to allow a gay senior to wear female clothing at his graduation on June 2.

Brandon Navarro originally planned to skip graduation before a talk with his principal brought permission for him to dress as he felt comfortable, KHOU News reports.

?I honestly consider myself more of a cross dresser,? said Navarro. ?There are kids at my school and they are gay, but they keep it under wraps,? he told KHOU.

Navarro attends Waller High School in Waller, Texas, a city about 30 miles northwest of Houston. After skipping prom to avoid problems, Navarro said he dropped his plans to wear a dress and high heels with his long hair after a teacher reminded him of the graduation dress code. The rules require senior males to wear slacks and shirts with their hair above the collar.

Navarro?s mother then got involved and he met with the principal. While he?ll have to leave the earrings and high heels in his wardrobe, he?ll be able to wear a dress under his gown.

?

MMATraining Take: I don?t disagree with anything Mir said since he?s definitely one of the UFC?s iconic heavyweights. However, I?ll be genuinely surprised if he gets by Dos Santos. The Brazilian?s striking is too good and Mir?s chin is too questionable.

I think a little of her Dad has rubbed off onto her! ?What do you think about what she is saying? ?Is she right? ?Is there a tendency to create dependence? ?Please post your response, thanks. ?Incidentally, she got 100% for this essay.</p> <p> <b>Here's the statement that she had to respond to:</b></p> <p> <i>Increasingly exercise is being advocated as a treatment strategy for a range of?medical conditions. In response, a new field of 'clinical exercise prescription' has?evolved. Clinical exercise specialists aim to prescribe safe and physiologically?sound programmes. These specialists working with clients in clinical settings?often create a dependence that effectively changes the client's perception of?physical activity or exercise. We encourage this dependence by over-complicating?exercise prescription.</i></p> <p> <i>Consider the above statement and provide well argued support for your interpretation of?the statement.</i></p> <p> Exercise prescription experts working in the clinical setting overly complicate exercise prescription creating a dependency. This tendency to encourage the individual to brainlessly defer to the ?expert? is symptomatic of what is happening throughout modern society: The insidious process of disempowerment of the individual and the granting of their power of choice to both the State and to the professional Expert. The two drivers of this process are the desire of others to get their hands on the hard-earned dollars of the individual and the ever-growing need by the State to have total control over every aspect of its citizens? lives.?</p> <p> An expert is a person who belongs to a secretive organisation, called a ?profession?. For a group to be a profession it must have, in addition to rituals of initiation, such as exams and internship, it must have its own secret language in the form of special acronyms and long-winded words.?</p> In the profession of orthopaedics, for example, indecipherable acronyms abound. These leave the prostate patient in a state of confused awe and helplessness before the God-like specialist.<p>The diagnosis,?IDKJ?, is authoritatively pronounced by the orthopaedic surgeon and recorded for posterity upon the ?God-Sheet?. Upon viewing this pronouncement from On High, all those down the priestly line of command obediently respond with appropriate mutterings of agreement and the patient is anointed with ritualistic treatments, such as ultrasound and core conditioning. ?IDKJ?, if you would like to know, is priestly code for ?Internal derangement of the knee joint?. That still does not mean much at all to the unwashed. There are actually codes within codes. IDKJ has three meanings. Translated from professional orthopaedic jargon, ?IDKJ? actually means ?You have something wrong with your knee?. But wait - there?s more to this code. It really means ?I Don?t Know Jack-shit?. Only those high up within the orthopaedic priesthood know that one! So, if they don?t know jack-shit about what is going on with a person?s sore knee, why don?t they say so? The reason why they do not is because doing so would be giving away some of the power they have over the individual.</p><p> <b><span><i>Knowledge is Power: with Ignorance it is Control</i></span></b></p> <br/> This process of disempowerment is in evidence within clinical exercise prescription. The average reading age of New Zealand adults is 13 years, so why use words like ?biceps? or ?abdominals? when working with a patient when ?upper arm? and ?tummy? will suffice? Why teach incredibly complex and potentially dangerous exercise routines that involve teetering on an over-sized ball that requires constant supervision to prevent complete confusion and inevitable injury from falling off when the same could be achieved with mowing the lawn with a hand-mower or digging the garden with a spade? Which is better when it comes to real practical rehabilitation? Unless the patients are in training for the next Swiss Ball Olympics!<p>Further complicating matters for the patient is the drive by over-inflated egos which require constant pumping. Experts need to totally bamboozle their patients to create a dependency which will keep pumping hard to ensure their ego doesn't deflate. Utter complexity with the aid of exclusive props (very expensive exercise machines), along with not really understanding a single word of the professional language ensures patients keep coming back. And this of course equals profit!</p><p>Exercise prescription must of course address the health issue at hand, but needs to be in a form that the individual can apply to their unique personal circumstances, relevant to their everyday life. It must be based on their lifestyle and what they prefer to do, without reliance on expensive and fairly inaccessible exercise equipment. When a patient goes to a rehabilitation clinic they are expected to leave their brain in the carpark. Instead, exercise prescription should empower the individual. (Reuters) - Egyptians, choosing their leader freely for the first time in history, voted for a second day on Thursday in an election that is a fruit of last year's popular revolt against <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1337862667_0">Hosni Mubarak</span>.</p> <p> After six decades under authoritarian, military-backed rule, <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1337862667_3">Egypt</span>'s 50 million voters can decide whether to entrust the most populous Arab nation to an Islamist president for the next four years, as well as the Islamist-led assembly they chose earlier.</p> <p> But secular candidates like ex-Arab League chief <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1337862667_1">Amr Moussa</span> and Mubarak's last premier <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1337862667_2">Ahmed Shafiq</span> are in with a chance.</p> <p> Some voters voice disappointment with the performance of parliament, where the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1337862667_4">Muslim Brotherhood</span>'s party has the biggest bloc. The assembly has been unable to assert itself over the government appointed by the generals who took over from Mubarak.</p> <p> Alarmed by rising crime, disorder and a failing economy, some Egyptians favor a man with government or military experience, even if he harks back to the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1337862667_6">Mubarak era</span>.</p> <p> Queues built up outside some polling stations in the baking sun, with many voters determined not to miss their chance to influence the first round. The government declared Thursday a public holiday to allow state employees to cast their vote.</p> <p> If no one wins more than half the votes needed for outright victory, the top two will contest a run-off on June 16 and 17. First-round results may be clear by Saturday, but an official announcement is not due until Tuesday.</p> <p> "I came yesterday and found it very crowded so I came today," said Khaled Abdou, a 25-year-old engineer voting in Cairo. "I must participate in choosing the president and I hope this leads to stability and the change needed."</p> <p> Voting passed off calmly on Wednesday, apart from a stone-throwing attack on Shafiq, 70, a former air force chief.</p> <p> Other leading candidates are the Brotherhood's <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1337862667_5">Mohamed Mursi</span>, 60, independent Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, 60, Moussa, 75, who also served as Mubarak's foreign minister in the 1990s, and leftist Hamdeen Sabahy, 57.</p> <p> "BETTER CONTROL"</p> <p> According to election consultant Ossama Kamel, fewer abuses have occurred in this vote than in the parliamentary poll that ended in January, partly because of lessons learned then.</p> <p> He predicted a last-minute rush to the polls on Thursday, with voting time extended, perhaps for several hours.</p> <p> "We have seen a lot better control of campaigning on election day than during the parliamentary vote when there were lots of violations, with candidates and their supporters hustling people outside polling stations," he told Reuters.</p> <p> The vote marks a crucial stage in a turbulent army-led transition racked by protests, violence and political disputes. The generals who took charge when Mubarak was ousted on February 11, 2011, have pledged to hand over to the new president by July 1.</p> <p> Even then the army, whose grip reaches deep into government and the economy, is likely to wield influence for years to come. A tussle over who should write the constitution also means the new president will not know his own powers when he is elected.</p> <p> Independent lawmaker Amr el-Shobaki says the president's election marks the start, not the end, of Egypt's transition.</p> <p> "Fifteen months in the life of this nation were wasted in anarchy, randomness and unprecedented poor performance that means it is still searching for a way into the interim period," he wrote in Al Masry Al Youm newspaper.</p> <p> With no reliable opinion polls, the presidential race is wide open, a pleasant change for Egyptians accustomed to the routinely forged votes of Mubarak's 30 years in power.</p> <p> The Muslim Brotherhood said Mursi was ahead after the first day of voting. Moussa's campaign also put Mursi in the lead with its candidate second. Their estimates could not be confirmed.</p> <p> "This is the first time we can really choose our president and no one will mess with the result," said Ahmed Shaltout, a 36-year-old lawyer who said he would vote for Mursi.</p> <p> Explaining why he favored Moussa, Mohamed Salem, a shopkeeper near the Pyramids, said: "I want security and prosperity like before. We in the tourism sector were the most hurt. We could not count the number of tourists coming into our shops every day. Now we hardly need our fingers to count them."</p> <p> SECURITY CONCERNS</p> <p> Egyptians appear divided, even within families, between those willing to give Islamists a chance to rule this deeply conservative country and those who put security first.</p> <p> "Security is the most important thing of course. If there is security we will have work, money and an economy. If there is no security no tourists will come. That's the first thing," said Sayed Mohamed, 33, a company manager, who supports Shafiq.</p> <p> The next president will face huge tasks in reviving Egypt's wilting economy and restoring security. The sprawling police force, which virtually collapsed during the anti-Mubarak revolt, is only a shadow of its once-feared presence.</p> <p> Security is Shafiq's strongest card. A former aviation minister, he was appointed prime minister days before Mubarak fell and quit soon afterwards in response to popular protests.</p> <p> But his links with the Mubarak era may tell against him.</p> <p> When he voted in Cairo, protesters hurled shoes and stones at him, crying: "The coward is here, down with <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1337862667_7">military rule</span>."</p> <p> Even with 12 candidates to choose from, many Egyptians seem unconvinced by any of them, resolving to vote for the least bad.</p> <p> "None of them is good enough to be president but Mursi is the best of the worst," said Sherif Abdelaziz, a 30-year-old voter in the capital's slum district of Manshiet Nasr.</p> <p> "There are lots of poor people, not just me. Many people live amid this rubbish. We need to give them justice, bread, access to hospitals," he said. "If you have money in Egypt, you can go to any hospital and live, if you don't, you die."</p> <p> He disparaged Shafiq and Moussa as "feloul", or remnants from the Mubarak era, and said that if either was elected president a new revolution would kick off in Tahrir Square.</p> <p> Mubarak, 84, is contemplating the spectacle of a free election from the upscale Cairo hospital where he is confined while on trial for ordering the killing of protesters and for corruption. A verdict is due on June 2, two weeks before any presidential run-off. A death sentence is possible but unlikely.</p> <p> (Additional reporting by Tom Perry and Edmund Blair; Writing by Alistair Lyon)</p><p><a
