Frank Mir understands beating Junior dos Santos is bigger than just winning the belt

May 26

In a matter of hours Frank Mir will enter the Octagon in hopes of procuring his third UFC heavyweight title by taking out 14-1 slugger Junior dos Santos. If he?s able to do so the distinction make Mir the most decorated fighter from the division in UFC history and likely secure his spot as one of the sport?s all-time greats.

Mir was recently asked to comment on the match-up where he admitted his headlining match-up with Dos Santos at UFC 146 is the most significant of his career.

?I believe so, up to this point,? said Mir on the topic in an interview with Fuel TV, also pointing to the all-heavyweight lineup and it being Memorial Day Weekend. ?It?s a big thing.?

?It?s definitely a step in that direction but a lot of those things will get you distracted from the task at hand,? added Mir while discussing the impact of winning a third championship would have on his reputation. ?Really, honestly, I have a very tough opponent ahead of me and the title is what I?m going for. Trying to win the fight is the most important thing. Everything afterwards, mashing numbers?that?ll be things I think about in days to come.?

The UFC 146 PPV kicks off at 10:00 PM EST with undercard action firing up on Facebook at 6:45 PM EST.

MMATraining Take: I don?t disagree with anything Mir said since he?s definitely one of the UFC?s iconic heavyweights. However, I?ll be genuinely surprised if he gets by Dos Santos. The Brazilian?s striking is too good and Mir?s chin is too questionable.
